Capturing the First Day of School

2009-09-15-preschool.png

Today was the first day of preschool - a momentous event for the kids. Probably even more so for the parents. So what's a great way to capture the memories of this happy milestone?

How about these great photos? Just create a small sign that includes the school, the teacher, perhaps the date, and snap away. Years later it's a great way to see what your child was wearing, who their teacher was, etc. We snapped our own version this morning along with a few candids from drop-off.

this photo is sweet, but i have to say the dress is amazingly cute. i want it, and i don't even have a little girl.

my son's first day of preschool is coming up in one week. can't wait to see what other ideas people have!

That is a sweet photo. I take a picture of my child every year on the first day of school wearing her backpack, and then I post the years of photos on the family's blog. It is amazing to see the changes in her face, and especially her smile going from toothless to the grown up teeth. My middle child is officially a Kindergartener and he took his official first day picture this month too.

My parents did a less fancy version of this!

They always lined us up on the front porch and made us hold up the number of fingers for the grade we were entering (starting over at 1 for high school). My patient parents waited for the day they could use the photos to embarrass us all at graduation parties, in yearbooks, etc. More amusing than the clothes or the awkward-years looks was the facial expression progression from "delighted first grader" to "Mom and Dad do I really have to do this in front of my friends?" high schooler.

Years ago, while in grad school, I jokingly snapped a picture of me on the first day of the term with the same set-up -- only I held a sign that read "23rd grade." I sent it to my parents, who at home were still taking the traditional back-to-school photos of my youngest siblings.

Gonna be a printed sign with "My First Day of Preschool" and the month/year. Nothing fancy. I was going to do it on a balloon then tape the release, but it's not that great to let balloons go. I guess you could put the words on a party hat or on a shirt.

I wish I had thought of this!! My son has been in day care since 9 weeks, but he moved to the preschool room August 10th. I'll try to remember this for Pre-K next August!

(Back to school stuff in August would be helpful for those of us that start early. Talking about back to school now is soo last month for us ;-) )

I've taken photos of my son the last 3 years. I wish I would have done his earlier years of pre-school, but I only got Pre-K up.
