Last summer we happily recalled fashion plates - that 70s-80s semi-artistic treasure for kids everywhere. Some toys and activities are just too cool to go away, so we think this would make a great gift in 2009 if you still have your old set to pass down or are able to score one on eBay. If you're lucky enough to still have old "drawings" stored somewhere, dig them out for framing -- it will add some instant vintage style in your favorite little girl's room.

YES, Fashion Plates! I always liked the big, floppy hats.

I had both a "modern" (from the early 90's) set of these, and the original set in the picture that was passed down to me by an older friend. This sort of thing just reinforces my pack-rat tendencies, because if I hold on to everything for long enough, it will become cool again or I will find a new use for it. If only I had unlimited storage space!

My mom is a teacher and took our old set into her classroom for kids to play with on rainy days when they couldn't go outside. Oddly enough each year it's the boys who fight over it . . .

I always wanted these when I was little. Then my friend gave me her set for my 16th birthday and I've had it ever since. I use it to make birthday cards and all manner of people with thought bubbles added. The best ever.

Oh, now this takes me back. In the UK we had something similar called Fashion Wheel:

But Fashion Plates looks even cooler. Framing the drawings is a great idea. Wonder if I can get one on ebay!

I never had Fashion Plates (I was just a little bit young for them back in the '80s), but I saved all my best illustrations from design school...

I loved these as a kid. My friend had them, and I wanted a set soooo bad. I would spend hours at her house playing with them.

LOOOVED these. I would sneak out of bed and color with them on the floor of my room by the crack of light coming in from the hallway. I eventually became a fashion designer. I totally want these for my daughter- the OLD ones.

How odd, I was just thinking about these a couple days ago. If only I had a little girl as an excuse to get them...

I loved these as a kid. They were one of the toys me and my little sister always fought over. I will have to be on the lookout now.

What a delight to see this! I have asked many people whether they remember these, and nobody ever knows what I'm talking about. I loved Fashion Plates.
Spirograph, on the other hand, bored me to tears.
