apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Flowers (and a Playhouse) in the Attic

A common, recurring dream among apartment dwellers is to find a door that opens to a (huge) room you never knew you had. (We hate waking up from this dream.) In Kathryn's case (a homeowner) this dream sort of came true. Her husband convinced her to create a "bonus" room in the attic space above their garage and in the process they discovered a little, unused nook behind a wall. Tempted to seal it up, they thought better of it and instead created a small playhouse for their kids.

The diminutive doorway really kills us with its cuteness. Kathryn is adding to the playhouse over time and so far has included a small table and chair set, a mirror for dress-up and a curtained window perfect for puppet shows.

You can see more photos as well as a before photo at the excellent blog she keeps with Mellisa, Nanny Goat.

This is adorable! I would have gone nuts over this as a kid. A very creative use of a random space. I love that it even has a light switch! A suggestion (if there's room): a mini fridge stocked with juice boxes and kid snacks?

My grandparents used to keep one closet in their house empty. Though it sounds a little creepy now, I used to close myself in there and play forever! I was really fond of small, enclosed places that I could make my dens, and Granny and Grandpa would indulge me. I would have loved this as a child!

I've had that exact dream of finding a huge room I never knew I had! And the entrance to it was under my stairs. This playhouse is wonderful.

That's adorable. I would have adored that as a child.

As a mom, though, the one thing that strikes me is how are they going to get the vacuum in there to clean that shag rug? I hope theirs is small enough to fit in that little door!

FYI this post title is also the title of a book about some kids locked in an attic, starved, poisoned, and some other teenage hormonal things. Just thought it was an interesting title choice for a child-centric blog.

Hi mooie_ziel - yes the title is a reference to the V.C. Andrews book which I think every girl in my class read in Junior High. Since, as far as we know, kids aren't usually reading the blog, I think pop culture references and (possibly lame) attempts at humor are okay.
