apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Gray Kids Rooms
Ohdeedoh in Europe

graychildwood.jpgLately I've been noticing a lot of grays used in European children's rooms -- a gender-neutral color with a calming effect. This "warm gray" bedroom from Belgian company Childwood gets a lift from bright white accents.

This charming girls room in shades of gray and cream from Cute.fr is warm and girly without being too, well, cute.

And this bedding in shades of gray from Serendipity in Paris, combined with cool blue accents, has a calming look that can last from the nursery to the adolescent's room.

Would you use gray in a child's room?

Wow... that top one looks miserable! Fun to see something different, though.

I agree, I like the gray with some pops of color, but the first one is terrible. :(

Hey- we (Javis Davis) just put up a new Joel Dewberry fabric collection that would totally go with that.

Aren't we trendy!

Did anyone else think of a prison cell when they saw these pics? Yuck.

We used grey in our nursery with orange - the Binth Alphabet poster was our inspiration.

That first one is not what I would call "calming" unless by "calming" you mean "so dismal that all one's energy evaporates."

I think a little gray would be OK, but that first room is just grim. I'd like the second room better if the "cream" was more of a pink. A true pink and grey would be girly with a more sophisticated edge for an older girl. And the last isn't bad, but there's too much gray.

BTW, eskkimmo--I love the Binth alphabet poster. I bet your nursery is wonderful. I'm planning an orange (with yellow and pink) nursery right now, using some of Amy Butler's Midwest Modern fabrics.

I agree, the top one is horrible! I do like light gray in nurseries, though. I bet the Binth-inspired one with orange is great. We want pics!

The top one looks like one of those black & white photos of an orphanage of "olden days"-too dreary without any color. Also kind of reminds me of a kid's jail. Not exactly the look you want for a new baby.

Love the chalkboard panels, but the rooms make me sad.

I like a soft gray with blue or pink, but the top one looks like Tim Burton designed it!!

i actually really like the first one. i think once all of the kid's bright toys were in the room it wouldn't seem dismal at all.
