apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Inspiration: Anna's Colorful Nest

annasQUADnurspic.jpgAnna sent us an e-mail wanting to share her wonderful work with us. Her life as a designer began with creating her own children's room. Color and movement fills each space and we love the details throughout each one.

Anna tells us a bit about each of her rooms...

"I happened to love a particular high end wallpaper which was pretty much out of my price range so I decided to knock off a version of the image in vinyl. As for the decor, I had a super hard time finding something unique for a baby's room. I had some wonderful fabric that sang beatnik hippie. Being a 60's by product myself it resonated and became the mod kitsch inspiration for the rest of Lola's space."anna-lolapic.jpg

"For Oliver, he was into dinosaurs and also simultaneously having really bad nightmares about dogs. So I decided to make him some hefty mascots for nighttime protection, hence the two dinos. I hand drew the image, brought it to my local sign maker and had him magnify and replicate in vinyl. The rest was a mix of garage sale and vintage finds, like the dresser, which I repainted to suit the room."anna-oliverpic.jpg

"Nicky requested 'gears and robots with silver, gold and red.' Hmmm, how to interpret that? I constructed the wall art using go cart gears, Plexiglas and spray paint. The vintage robots and space-y anemone chair were eBay scores. The nook and bed surround were customized with repurposed ikea curtains and the funky pillow fabrics made a graphic pop." anna-nickyPIC.jpg

"Dinah loved 'colors and animals'. Again, the inspiration for this room came from the very colorful vintage fabric that I used to upholster the custom headboard. It felt natural to put an Asian slant on it, so I painted in a bold green and used lots of bright colors to accent. Using white helped to balance the palette so it didn't get too, too wild in there. I had a vision for the framed animal art but not technique...so I sketched out some figures and gave them to painter, Beverly Truxell who did a wonderful job."anna-dinahpic.jpg

Thank you for sharing, Anna. Do you have a great room you want to share with us? Be sure to send us an e-mail at nursery@apartmenttherapy.com.

I love this designer's vision and ability to make her fun kids' concepts reality without breaking the bank by finding creative ways to reproduce high-end furnishings, fabrics and wallpapers. I think she's found a real niche in the home decorating world.

Nicky and Dinah are my children-- Anna designed these rooms and was terrific to work with-- the other thing that I wanted to mention about these rooms is that we as parents really wanted designs that could transition with the kids as they got older -- the robot/gear room easily becomes a teen room if we strip off the cute robots; Dinah's room will also hold it's own through child/preteen and even teen years. The pictures are great but the in-person rooms are even better, when their friends come to visit we always hear "your room is SO COOL" again, and again, and again!
