Inspiration: Indoor Treehouse

092109-indoor-treehouse.jpgJust because you live in the city doesn't mean you can't fulfill your child's dream of having a treehouse. That's the thinking behind this fabulous indoor space created for one lucky NYC child by the kid-oriented design firm Minor Details.

092109-indoor-treehouse-2.jpgEven if you don't have a room in your home to dedicate to an entire treehouse, there are some wonderful takeaway ideas that can be incorporated into a child's room. We love the tree sculpture that juts out into the space. And if you're handy, the stairway nook and slide could be replicated on a smaller scale, with storage built into the steps. (Slides similar to the yellow plastic one pictured here can be found at large home/hardware stores for around $100.)

I totally assumed a bed / mattress was at the top of that slide, making the "treehouse / playhouse" an actual, functional sleep space. THAT would be cool. This just seems like a silly use of space by people who should probably just consider moving to the 'burbs.
... and for a kids play space, all that white seems rather stark and un-fun.
Sorry.

I've been wanting to build something similar to this for wintertime play in my house. The weather gets super cold and snowy here and there are some days when we just can't go outside. Thanks for the inspiration!

Living in an area where outdoor play isn't always possible, an indoor playground is an awesome idea. I forgot that we used to have one in a house we used to rent. Now that we're in a house again, this is an idea I'd like to re-visit. It isn't a silly use of space at all! I'd rather have my kids climbing around on an indoor structure when the weather outside dips below minus 30 celcius, or above 30 celcius in the summer months...than have them parked in front of the TV.

Anyone know where to get a black and white striped rug like that? Thanks.
