apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look! Project Junior Nursery Cure

Brooklyn residents, Jasmine and Jay, participated in last year's AT Cure and in addition to masterfully tackling their living room, they transformed an awkward strip in their railroad apartment into a charming nursery for their son, Henry. We live in a railroad apartment ourselves so we know exactly the challenge they faced - how to make a dark, narrow, undefined space into a cozy, usable part of your home.

The space in question lies between Jasmine and Jay's living room and bedroom and Jasmine reports that it had become somewhat of a dumping ground where they stored things. I thought, "no way
could this 30 x 8 foot room ever be a real room..." But once we were forced to make it work, I realized that even a really narrow room can become a usable space.

As you can see from the photo above, they deliberated a bit on the paint and wisely chose a sunny yellow to compensate for the room's lack of windows. For the same reason, they went with a light-colored rug. 2008-02-28-cure3.jpg

The butter yellow glider was a Craigslist find and the sweet dresser is part of Ikea's Traby system which they've painted over. Blik wall decals add some playfulness to the room.

You know what this means: we can no longer use the dimensions of our similarly shaped room as an excuse to treat it like a second-class citizen. Hats off to Jasmine and Jay!

I believe the rug is CB2. Very nice room--I like the cheery colors.
