Instead of fighting against the constraints of small space living, embrace it. We love the idea of creating a sleeping nook, a room within a room, for children. It's cozy and safe and can work well when square footage is a challenge. We spotted this sleeping nook over at My Notting Hill.
The child's room is part of the Washington Design Center's Spring Design House. The built-in unit includes storage, a small bed, and a trundle bed underneath for sleepovers. All of this just on one wall. To create the recessed effect, the designer used wallpaper in the nook and matching curtains to frame it. Add proper lighting and some soft sheets and you're done. For those without the budget for a professional carpenter, we imagine a trundle bed frame, prebuilt bookshelves and molding could be put together for a similar look. Love this sleeping nook. Years ago I designed a sleeping alcove for a young girl. It looked like a circus tent with all appropriate textiles and pillows. She said it felt like she was sleeping under the big top.

We have this Hemnes daybed with a mosquito net above it to much the same effect for my little girl.
