Sophisticated Kid's Bathroom

What's your design philosophy? Many of you expressed your opinions in the comments to our previous post about Integrating Children Into Your Decor. Designer Sarah Richardson (see her nursery here) designed this kids-only bathroom.

Her design philosophy? I subscribe to the notion that there should be no themes, no motifs, no borders, no stencils, no primary-colour themes and no cutesy details.

No doubt the bathroom is beautiful - fresh shades of green against a sparkling white background. But tell us Ohdeedoh readers, do you like it for a kids-only bathroom?

I love the simplicity of this. I am in agreement with her design style except for the part about cutesy details - I think that's the key to making it look like a "kid" room. Details done in good taste of course! For example I think pbkids bathroom accessories are really neat and still appealing to design-conscious grownups.

It's a nice bathroom, with a nice use of one of my favorite colors. But I think aside from the just-placed-for-the-photo-ducks, I think the bathroom is missing the small whimsical elements and the practical items (such as a step stool, or small toilet seat) that says kids bathroom to me. I also find that sink basin completely impractical for kids. Unless the "kids" we're talking about here are actually "tweens."

agreed-- i was excited to see pics of mini toilets and sinks. the design itself is pretty meh to me.

i saw the episode of her show when she was doing this bathroom, and it is in fact for tweens. that said, why would anyone do a cutesy kiddie bathroom that your kids would outgrow in a couple of years? do people really do baby-themed bathrooms?

am i the only one who's sick and tired of those bowl above the counter-style sinks? i think they're synonymous with cheaply made 450 square foot condos.

nothing about this says "kid" to me -- it actually reminds me of stuff I saw in 1970's design magazines (must be the mirror, the chair, and that shade of green). This is more about the parents than the kids.

I've seen fabulous examples of kid bathrooms in Euro design magazines (living etc. and elle decor) -- one in particular stands out.

It was in Holland, and was meant for 3 kids -- the eldest just entering the tweens. The bathroom was made into a shower wetroom, and completely tiled with randomly variegated mosaic tiles, from white through to red (including shades of pink). The counter top and storage cabinet were made of a water-proof material in red, and there were lots of shower nozzles and hooks for towels, etc. Easy maintenance and recognizant of how kids use bathrooms. Great fun, and very youthful.

This in comparison feels fussy and old.

I agree with most of these comments. It's not a kid bathroom and I don't think it's even kid friendly. It needs a non-skid step stool for little ones, apparently this is a teen bathroom so that's out here. But I've not met any teens that didn't want more counter space. As a matter of fact a GREAT teen bathroom would have a full length mirror with a place to sit on the floor in front of it and put on make up. THAT would be a teen bathroom. This looks just like the bathroom in my aunt's house that hasn't been renovated since the 60's. Oh, except for the sink which doesn't follow the style of the bathroom. For a designer this is a miss.
