The Art Of Making Breast Milk Soap

090309-breastmilksoap.jpg Making milk soap isn't a new concept by any stretch of the imagination, but using breast milk in the mix was a first for us, even though we consider ourselves well versed in all things "crafty." Click through the jump to see how you can do it at home, barring time, desire and of course a small surplus of breast milk.

Although we don't think it's a craft that will catch on by any means, we know there's bound to be a few of you who have either already tried this at home, or are already googling to read more about it. The phenomenon hit the internet back late 2007, early 2008 from the research we've done and now has a dedicated cult following of women making it at home.

Here's a few recipes to get you started (we liked this one and this one), but the key component in each is breast milk. You'll need between 1 and 6 cups, as you have extra, simply freeze it off into ice cubes to use later on in the process. Keeping it frozen will help keep the temperature down when it's later combined with the lye (which raises the temperature dramatically).

Check out Inhabitots for some answers to a few safety concerns and questions you might have about the process.

As someone who is both a soap maker and a breast feeder... uh, no. Just no. There could be no way.

"Hey, Dad, I made some soap!" Yeah, no.

I agree, who in the world is running that kind of milk surplus. No one I know is!

Ack! Not gross, but a waste of milk!!! Nooooo!! I guess if it had gotten terribly freezer burned or something, maybe.... I don't see why human milk is any grosser than cow milk or goat milk, and people seem to like soaps made out of those. If my milk were gross, I sure wouldn't feed it to my baby daughter....

Please, no.

If you have a surplus of milk, you can donate it (within certain guidelines).

As someone who never made enough milk of her own, this just kills me. Why on earth would you turn it into soap when it could be donated?!
