The Ikea Hacked (Dining Room) Nursery

091109-ikeahack.jpg Alison needed space for her new baby and wanted to keep things on a budget. Not the "budgets" you see on tv or in most magazines, but a real budget! She diy-ed and made several great hacks to some standard Ikea products to create this fabulous nursery in her dining room! This way for details...

You can find the full list of hacks, alterations and adjustments made to the pieces shown above, over at Ikea Hacker. The best part about this nursery is it's big bold style in such a small space. Check out the photo in full to see what we're talking about! It's nestled between the front door and the kitchen!

Thanks Alison! Nice Work!

I have to be honest... this set up is a little mystifying to me unless it is a temporary set up. I like how you can close the crib off with the drapes... but there are alot of safety issues with the set up & safety is rarely the first thing that catches my eye. A standing infant can get into alot of trouble. The hooks in the wall are at young toddler height. Yikes.

over at ikea hacker, the photo isn't cropped as closely and you can see that this space is crammed between the kitchen and the front door. it just seems like it would make more sense to keep baby in your bedroom. all she would be doing in this space is sleeping, right? i mean, why not let her sleep near you, where it's quiet and dark, and just use this space as her play area?

I'm not a Mom, so I don't know if my opinion counts or not. But last time I checked, babies grow up to be toddlers who grow up to be kids and so on. Are you going to make your 12 year old sleep in what looks like a closet? That's a little too Harry Potter under the stair case for me.

Not. Safe.
Not. Practical.

a mattress on the floor of a closet would be safer. And more practical.

Who said anything about the future? She lives in a one-bedroom condo right now.

And I just realized this is for a four-month old, who could easily roll over and grab those drapes.

and last (I swear) we live in 650 sq feet, with TWO kids, so I DO know how hard it is to live with children in a matchbox.

I can't get past the shelving above the crib. It's setting off huge red EARTHQUAKE flags in my head - I guess that's what living in Southern CA will do to you. :)

Very very poor choice for the bookshelves. So unsafe.

I wouldn't want those shelves hanging above my bed.

"The wall hangers that come with these bookcases are a joke, so I secured them with 8 L-brackets screwed into the studs, and a 2x4 underneath the shelves to act as a bottom support."

Still I just wouldn't trust ikea and particle board to hold together. I've had too many ikea shelves just sort of pull themselves apart over time.

No need to worry, tarsengreen, this room isn't for you. I really like the way you used the space you have. Most 4 month olds I know sleep quite a bit and if you hang out in the adjacent room then why not have them near.

I think it's great - don't listen to all the haters commenting here...

This really does not look safe. I can't think of a sleeping arrangement for a child of any age that includes shelves directly over their bed. I'd suggest a "Moses basket" for the baby to sleep in, next to the parents' bed. Use the new "room" for storage/ changing area-- that seems to be the big issue here re space, is where to put all of baby's accoutrements.

I hope you change it so it's safer!

My god you are all so snarky! I understand the safety concerns--I do hope the shelves are super reinforced--but I doubt all of your houses are 100% baby proof! Cut the woman some slack. Living in a one-bedroom condo is hard enough as it is, let alone with an infant! Kudos to them for not letting the baby invade their bedroom, and for creating such a sweet looking baby nook.

This is an interesting concept. I think she did a great job on IKEA hacking but this room will soon be outgrown due to saftey reasons ie. shelving, curtains, pulling frames off the wall.

I can see that Allison did the best with limited space and did this with style.
