Using Dark Colors in a Small Nursery

2009-05-14-nursery1.jpg

Most of the nurseries we see feature pastels, muted colors or brights on the wall. But what do you think about using a dark color in the nursery like the one we found at Design Sponge?

For smaller rooms (and lets face it, the nursery is often the smallest room in the house), dark colors can be used successfully to give depth to the walls, making it recede and helping to make the room appear larger. We like the black crib against the dark blue wall; it makes the rest of the colors and patterns in the nursery pop. See more of this fantastic nursery at Design Sponge.

If you told me I'd like a navy blue, mint green and orange/yellow color scheme, I might have laughed -- but this is nice.

That curtain is great!

Im not a fan of navy blue but it looks cute. My daughter's crib is black too and it looks gorgeous.

I think these color combinations are fabulous, but part of what makes these dark colors in this tiny room work is the amount of light it gets-and it looks like it gets A LOT! If it didn't, it would be dark and depressing.

I like it! But then I have a dark blue wall in my living room. The color scheme in general is great.

Love it. It looks very crisp.
Dark colors in small rooms is a favorite trick of mine. Don't be afraid of the dark!

I fantasized about a nursery with dark chocolate brown walls, bright white trim and colorful accents... but alas, he ended up with a soft green and blue nursery. I guess I wasn't brave enough, but this nursery gives me confidence. Maybe next time...
