Ohdeedoh Kids' Color Contest
Entry #10: Simon's Room

simoncontest-pic1.jpg

Name: Ali
Location: Eugene, Oregon
Children: Simon, age 6 1/2

Inspiration: Everyday life is really the inspiration here. Simon's room decorations have been added to over time starting with the Pottery Barn Kids planet mobile (found on eBay), followed by the thrift store yellow shelf, and the recent addition of the Ikea star lights. I like white walls and feel like they invite lots of other colors to be at home in the room.

Tip for Using Color: Colorful is fun but it can be overwhelming. Choose one or two accent colors that anchor the space. In this room the red wood boxes spread out over two shelves and the light blue art pieces in conjunction with the map and the globe lend color consistency throughout the room.

Colors Used: Wall color is basic white. Red wood boxes from Fred Meyer. Baskets from Target.

I like the room itself and think it's very nicely done, but I don't see a whole lot of color being used (other than a few accent pieces of course). I love the hallway - very nice and neutral.

i think it is a very colorful room. and i like that it is a kid room with kid stuff.
i was going to enter our playroom in the contest but the walls are really light and most of the color comes from art and accessories. i guess that isn't a hit.

Hey guys - part of my idea in entering is that celebrating color in a child's room can come from lots of different places vs. just wall color :). Wall color has a big immediate impact for sure.

Especially in our home, Simon's room is a very bright colorful spot in contrast to the rest of the neutral areas (like the hallway, our bedroom, living room, etc) throughout the house. Thanks for considering!

I'm totally with Simon's mom. IMO it takes more creativity to make a room colorful than to just slap up a coat of paint in a loud or designer trendy color and do matching accents that don't consider a growing child.

As a mom to a 6yr old boy myself, I find it amusing to see all these uber-perfect nursery entries that belong to babies under 6 months old because it's so much easier at that point. No one is yanking down the accessories, breaking the delicate touches, marking up those colorful walls or insisting on adding their own clashing favorite items. The real test of a well designed kid's room is when the kids accumulate a mish-mash of their favorite stuff and you can still make it look good and this one does.

I haven't seen my entry up yet, but I was kind of disheartened to see so many pristine looking, catalog-like rooms. I'd like to see a contest about lived-in looking & functionally designed kid's rooms.

I love the lived in feeling of this room and how although there isn't a loud color on the wall, other aspects of the room really bring it to life. When I look at this room I can totally imagine what a fun, imaginative child Simon must be! :)

As for being disheartened by pristine looking and catalog like rooms-I think all the rooms entered have a lot of personality and personal touches that the parents love and put thought into and that`s what really counts.

I know when taking pictures of Haley's room I certianly tidied up a bit (read: a lot) because I wanted to present her room at its finest- this is a contest afterall, so i put everything in its rightful place. Blocks in her stockings, play kitchen utensils in her play kitchen, etc. In it's natural state... books, dolls and spinny doo-dads, and pots and pans are scattered all about the floor.

I totally recognized Simon's room from the lights behind the bed! I've always liked his room because a lot of what's in it comes from what he likes and what he's interested in...his input is visible all over. To me, that adds "color."

I sometimes regret painting my sons room a bright color, sometimes I don't think it feels cozy enough I'm not sure what it is.?? But I like this room I think it feels really cozy and with neutral walls it can easily change.

Really nice! Where did you get the planet mobile above his bed?

I found it on ebay - it is an older product from Pottery Barn Kids.

I really enjoy this room and I also really enjoy the framed art above the coat rack. Where is this art from? It looks so unique!
