Name: Erin
Location: Oakland, CA
Child: Caleb, 16 months
Inspiration: We had painted the room before it was to be Caleb's, and the yellow seemed to be perfect for a baby, also. I was trying to think of what that yellow reminded me of, and it led to lions and the grasses of the savannas in Africa...

Inspiration continued: I made the quilt that is hanging on the crib (variations of which I now sell on my website, Piece Textiles), and the rest we put together from there. It became a personal challenge to take a very traditional children's theme (African animals) and make it contemporary and different.
Tip for Using Color: How you apply color helps to determine the style of the room. By choosing just one focal wall to make yellow, it makes the space look more contemporary than if we had painted the whole room. I chose to paint the latte rectangle adjacent to the crib to create a frame for the block printed elephants and hippos and also to emphasize and ground Caleb's crib. The rest of the colors that are brought in through toys, accessories, bedding, etc are bright and fun but easy to change out if he grows out of them. It was all about whimsy, contrast and eventual versatility.
Colors Used: All paint is from Sherwin Williams' no-VOC line:
White: Heron Plume SW 6070
Yellow: Optimistic Yellow SW 6900
Brown: Latte SW 6108
