Entry #19: Emmeline's Ray of Light

Emroom1.jpg

Name: Kaysie
Location: Takoma Park, MD
Child: Emmeline, 5 1/2 months

Inspiration: Em's room has great natural light, which we wanted to maximize as much as possible. We also wanted to find a color that would work well for a little lady or a little fella, and that wouldn't overwhelm the space. This color is just perfect -- it was initially a bit of a shock because it was so bright, but I soon realized that it changes to the most calming shades of yellow as the day goes on, and makes everything else in the room feel warm and inviting. It also exactly matches our baby's personality: loving, cheerful and spunky!

Tip for Using Color: Accessories can go a long way to making an inexpensive nursery look great. We found a super cheap, old rocking chair on Craigslist, and painted it white and reupholstered it. It's my favorite part of the nursery. We also bought Ikea furniture and switched out the dresser and armoire handles to add a little character to the pieces. Finally, we added personality to the walls with various prints that we found on Etsy.

Colors Used: Paint: Benjamin Moore Yellow Highlighter
Furniture: Craigslist for rug, rocker; Ikea for crib, dresser and armoire; Anthropologie for knobs
Fabric for rocker: Reprodepot
Sheets for crib: Dwell, on sale at Design Public
Art: Etsy (I love yellowmonday and johnwgolden)
Stuffed animals: Etsy (the Bean and Lulu the Penguin are my absolute favorite stuffed toys -- I found them at LemonCadet and Littlebigpants)
Sheer curtains: Pottery Barn Kids

I love this room! But then I love yellow. Still, even if it were a different color it would be lovely. Your rocker is wonderful, what a score. I've never seen one quite like it before, and you did a great job painting it and choosing fabric. You did an amazing job with inexpensive finds. And I think Emmeline is such a pretty name.

I agree - that rocker is fantastic! And I also love the color yellow, there is something so cheerful and pretty about it.

seriously.... that rocker is FANTASTIC... i have a wicker rocker we got for $5... next time around (if we get lucky like that) i would absolutely invest WAAAAAY more than $5 (or at least find one that isn't squeaky & whose arms dont hurt my elbows)... but i have rocker envy... HUGE rocker envy right now!!!! siiiiiiggghhhhhhh

btw... rest of the room's slammin also (and again if there's a lucky like that in our future yellow is sooooo a strong possibility)!!!!!

It's so sad that this rocker was a find on craig's list...It's so hard to find an inexpensive rocker that is beautiful, modern, and not gargantuan for those of us with small apartments. sigh ; (

Fabulous nursery! Mod but not cold. In fact, what I love most about this room is how warm it is. Fantastic job!

Pretty room! My daughter is also named Emmeline, you are the only other one I've encountered. Great taste! (:

Thanks for the kind words (about the color choice, the room, and Emmeline's name)! Yes, that rocker was a find, but craigslist is a beautiful thing, and we were lucky to get that rocker and a matching chair for $40 total. My husband reupholstered both: one for me and one for our daughter. He's gotta keep his girls happy.

I purchased the poster at Village. It looks like the price has doubled since I bought it, but it is really adorable in person:

I`m normally not a fan of yellow but this is done really well! I`m impressed. I also love how you used the rug to anchor the space, which I think a lot of rooms are missing :)
