Entry #2: Alice's Cheap and Cheerful Wonderland

2008-10-22-alice1.jpg

Name: Erin
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Children: Alice Vivian, 2 months old

Inspiration: We needed to turn our proper 1950's wood-paneled study into a little girl's room. The obvious thing to do was paint the paneling, but after weighing the pros and cons I instead opted to fill the room with as much color as possible...

Inspiration continued: I made two thrift store scores for our then unborn daughter that I just loved--a beautiful copy of Alice In Wonderland and three vintage baby dresses. The main colors in both were pink, green, blue and orange and the book even has trees (that looked to me like the paneling in the room) mixed in. The nursery evolved from there. We made, etsyed, or thrifted everything but the crib.

Tip for Using Color: If you can't paint your walls for one reason or another, don't fret! You can bring so much color into your space just by choosing fun and cheerful accessories. Or do what I did-- cover a sheet of drywall with craft paper, wallpaper, fun fabric or whatever inspires you, and mount that to your wall. It creates an instant colorful focal point, and you can easily recover it if you (or your little ones) fall in love with a new pattern.

I love what they did with it - would be really hard to work with wood paneling but they made it looks nice. Especially like the ceiling light.

I actually like the paneling! It looks tastefully retro, especially with the vintage toys on the wood ledge.

i really love that ceiling light... the baby is going to LOVE looking (and pointing) at that!!! a really nice job! Nice crib also... and nice having the white furniture to brighten it all up along w/the colors. i would consider maybe changing up the molding on the floors/ceiling & around the windows (or painting it something coordinating or vibrant)... but very nice job, and it looks comfortable and cozy....

Great room. I love the use of the desk as the changing table. Anyone know where can I find this crib?

Yes, I, too, have been looking for a crib just like this. Where's it from?

The crib is the Bonavita 3-in-1 Dropside Peyton Crib, in white. I really love the drawer under it!

The ceiling light we made from a regular paper parasol, purchased at a chain store-- Cost Plus World Market.

Thanks for all of your happy comments. :)

So cute! Are those the dresses hanging above the crib? They're beautiful, but I can't tell what they are, I'd love to steal that idea for my little girl's room.
