Name: Dominique
Location: Buffalo, NY
Children: Sophia, 3 1/2 years old and Ethan, 9 months old
Inspiration: Being a photographer, quality of light is what I am drawn to the most when selecting colors for our home. When we renovated this room to be Sophia's bedroom, I knew I wanted to make the most of the intense sunlight that filled the room for most of the day. The orange that we chose takes on many different moods throughout the day, in the morning it reflects the sunrise and is intense and rejuvenating. As the afternoon goes on and into the evening, the room becomes cozy and warm. At bedtime, it is soft on the eyes.
Inspiration Continued: As for accessorizing the room, there is a large pine tree outside of the window, and I wanted to bring that sense of nature inside. Sophia is a lover of all that is nature, and I love modern pattern and shape. The leaves on the tree are embroidery hoops that have been painted and filled with bold patterned fabrics. I tried to echo those fresh colors in toys and other artwork in the space. The deep browns in the room reflect the style throughout our house but also ground the room by giving a richness of color and a place for eyes to rest.
Tip for Using Color: I can't even tell you how long it took me to decide on how to choose color.....I knew I wanted orange but decided to choose the fabrics first, knowing that the palette of paint is unlimited. With such a strong color like orange, I think there needs to be a balance of neutrals as well so that the space is not too overstimulating!
Colors Used: Sherwin Williams Copper Harbor (but slightly modified to be made a hint darker.)

Super cute! Modern but a little different then all the other modern nurseries out there. Love the futon!

What is the fabric you used in the embroidery hoops? Is that what you matched the paint color too?
Great room!

Love the tree.

This is definitely one of my favorites so far! I esp love everything about the first picture - the low platform bed, the tree, the stools/ottomans (don't know what to call them), etc. Great job.

Love it! (The bear mask in the last picture kind of freaks me out, though.)

Thanks for all the feedback!
The fabrics I used are Heather Bailey Freshcut, Amy Butler Lotus and Joel Dewberry Sunburst. I pulled the paint color from the Freshcut fabric.
The stools are made from old drum shells with plywood lids that were upholstered with the same fabrics. We use them for storage and seating as well.
The squirrel pull toy was made especially for Sophia by Matsutake (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5311113), the mirror from PBteen on clearance a while back. The "bear" mask is actually a mouse mask that I bought in Venice when I studied in Italy back in college...Sophia loves it (but I suppose 3 year olds are attracted to the slightly macabre!)

Where is the bed frame from? West elm?

Yep, the bed is actually the futon lounger from West Elm...we had bought it awhile back and realized it was perfect for Sophia who has a habit of rolling out of bed! The bookcases are from Target- really pretty nice quality for the price and the dresser if Hemnes from Ikea...actually not that thrilled with it, as the drawer bottoms like to pop out if you have a lot of clothes in them. Thanks to everyone who voted!
