Entry #5: Sparingly Bold Nostalgia

2008-10-24-kristin.jpg

Name: Kristin
Location: Mount Vernon, WA
Children: Sayer, almost 10 months old

Inspiration: When we set out to create Sayer’s room, our color inspiration was a nostalgic nod to our own childhoods. We fondly remember the color combinations of the 1970’s - lime green, turquoise, orange, and brown. Our color philosophy when putting everything together is summed up as “sparingly bold”...

Inspiration Continued: Being that we are both artists, we filled Sayer’s room with a lot of handmade items. The mobile is something that I made with our color combination in mind, along with prints and pillows using the same characters. My husband “renovated” my old dollhouse (that my father originally made for me) into a changing table and book/toy storage. A friend, using fabric that we had chosen, also made the curtains for us. We chose a neutral color for the walls so it wouldn’t compete with the bright colors that we used throughout the space. My husband painted a large “S” on the wall (in a color that he custom created) to look like a shadow that completes the room.

Colors Used:
Walls: Restoration Hardware- “Silver Sage”
Inside Changing Table Doll House: Benjamin Moore- “Rumba Orange”

Tip for Using Color: A tip would be, don’t be afraid of color. Trust your instincts and select colors that really speak to you and that “feel good” to be around. I like using a neutral color for large spaces and shots of color in different textures throughout the space. I think if you choose colors that you love, and use accessories that you are drawn to, things naturally work together.

I think this is one of my favorite rooms - I love the bold lines and colors mixed with the floral prints of the curtains. Very nice!

Love it! What a creative use of the old dollhouse. The colors, the curtains, and the big S look great.

By the way, the fatboy looks great in the room. Is that the junior size? Is it comfy?

Oooh...Restoration Hardware's silver sage is my favorite room color; I've painted much of my living spaces with it.

Another good alternative is Benjamin Moore's Vale Mist.

These are exactly the colors I've been planning for my son's room. I love the "S"... I may have to steal that!

Thanks to Kristin and Teesmama for introducing me to the icrib! For those who haven't clicked through to gizmodo.com, it also has lights. It's also available on Amazon.

Thanks so much jaky799! We put the area rug together with carpet squares from FLOR.
And LaneC, the Fatboy is comfortable. It is also nice to plop in front of things that you don't want your little crawler to get to.
The ipod holder is great. You can put it on timer which is one of it's features- along with a night light. However, it goes through batteries like crazy!

Very nice! I think the big S (and it's color in combination with the wall color) is my favorite part. I like how you left the walls subtle and let the color come out through the details--classy, and calming for a nursery.

This is my favorite room. That renovated dollhouse is seriously awesome!! I love that the use of color is subtle yet there are great pops of boldness throughout, and everything ties together. I love the rug, fatboy, the piano, all the toys...LOVE LOVE LOVE!
