Danny Seo's "Antique" Bird Chandelier

2009-05-birdchandelier.jpg

Speaking of chandeliers...how lovely is this bird chandelier created by green/diy guru Danny Seo? It was inspired by a lighting fixture he once saw in an antique store costing thousands of dollars, but he made this one for about $15! Find his materials list below the jump.

This project is completely do-able and would be a charming addition to a baby or child's room. The materials are easy to find:

  • a cheap, wide, hanging light fixture (he used a $10 one from Ikea)
  • chicken wire (Lowes, Home Depot or your hardware store)
  • a variety of birds from a craft store (he found his at Michael's)
  • twigs (from your yard or park)

The bird chandelier is part of his makeover of actress Kerry Washington's apartment (featured in O: The Oprah Magazine in June) and it replaced track lighting. Visit Danny's blog, Daily Danny, to see how the chandelier looks in Ms. Washington's dining room as well as before and after photos of her revamped pad.

Holy crap, my boyfriend and I made the exact same thing (almost) a couple years ago, although we dismantled a light fixture we got at Home Depot for the light and made the rest of the body by hand. You can see a crappy picture of it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stupidtabby/3209755265/in/set-72157600560887831/.

Ours was inspired by something I saw in an Anthropologie catalog that was incredibly expensive.
