Entry #17: Dinosaur Play Mat

Project: Dinosaur Play Mat

What's inside this neat little pouch, you ask? Would you believe us if we told you it's an entire dinosaur world? Look and see...

dinomat2.jpgExplain how Amy Butler inspired this entry:
I admit, no Amy Butler fabric was harmed in the making of this play mat, but I can trace the inspiration to her nonetheless! I was making a purse for an online swap and finally splurged on some Amy Butler fabric I had been eyeing in my local quilt shop. That gave me the nudge I needed to start sewing regularly again, and I decided to make my son this play mat to contain all the little dinosaurs invading our house.

How did you make your project and what items did you use?
The design started with a pattern I found to make a pyramid shaped box. After I appliqued the pond, greenery and other parts of the mat, I layered the top over some batting and a backing and quilted through all the layers where I wanted the mat to fold. I then added zippers along the fold lines and "lava" ties so the volcano can be carried around. Resources: Fabric and zippers from Jo-Ann Fabric. The trees are straws wrapped in felt, with a fabric-wrapped poker chip as the base.

How totally cool! I love cool sewing projects for boys, they're so hard to find! You should have lied and said you used Amy Butler fabric! You win in my mind!
I am a sewing novice, but would love to make this....can you write out a tutorial?

Oh my goodness, this is brilliant! Can you either post a tutorial, or let me purchase one?! :)

That is the best playmat I've ever seen handmade or factory... The design is phenomonal!
