Project: Birthing Quilt

Not only did KirstenW make this lovely quilt to have with her while she gave birth, she finished it in the hospital the night before her little one was born!

Explain how Amy Butler inspired this entry:
I had read on a blog while I was pregnant about a woman who made a "birthing quilt" while she was pregnant to take to the hospital with her. I thought that was a lovely idea, so I went to my local fabric shop and picked out some delicious fabrics by Amy Butler for my quilt. (I am so, so in love with her polka dots.) The combination of colors and patterns inspired the design for the quilt - square blocks separated by a cream color. I just recently purchased "Little Stitches" and I can't wait to try some of those projects!

How did you make your project and what items did you use?
I started by choosing the fabrics for the quilt - I knew I wanted to use the polka dots, then I chose additional patterns that matched those. The quilt design I pretty much made up as I went along - patchwork squares stitched together with strips of cream between. The backing is 3 large blocks of the 3 polka dot fabrics. I made the quilt sandwich and machine-quilted the layers (including batting) together. I actually finished sewing the binding on in the hospital the night before I gave birth (I was induced). The nurses thought I was crazy, I think. My little one loves to play on it now.

So lovely. I love a quilt with a lot of white/cream in it.
