Look! Another Fantastic DIY Play Kitchen

ikea-kitchen-1.jpgWe've come to the conclusion that Ikea should be hiring Ohdeedoh readers to design toys for them. Sara sent us some photos of this beautiful play kitchen she built for her daughter last year, relying heavily on Ikea for parts. Keep reading for details and more photos...

ikea-kitchen-2.jpgSara's instructions for making your own Ikea-based play kitchen:

The base is a Traby shelf unit and legs, with 2 pieces of fir, notched to make the shelf frame. The shelf is a Stripa shelf (cut), and a Tjusig set of hooks.

The stove is 4 Eames circles decals, cut to size (not Ikea), a piece of maple fastened to the shelf unit with angle brackets, and 4 Kosing cabinet knobs. The knobs and screws are epoxied together so the knobs turn freely.

For the sink, we cut a hole in the Traby top (it really is cardboard in the middle, but surprisingly strong). We used a stainless steel bowl with a lip, fastened with nuts and bolts. A Sigfrid shelf bracket (cut) comprises the faucet. It rotates like the stove knobs.

The oven is a Traby door with one edge cut off, and also a hole cut in the middle with a jigsaw. We used another Stripa shelf (cut in two directions) for the handle, and some trim around the 'window' to hide the particleboard and my limited jigsaw skills. Some lid supports from the hardware store keep the door from opening too far.

We spent about $150 total, which is not as cheap as some of the recent ones on Ohdeedoh, but we are pleased with the way it looks, and our daughter loves that Mommy and Grandpa made it.

We love that not only is this a great, resourceful project, it's also multi-generational... a future heirloom. Thanks so much for sharing, Sara!

This is fantastic! The best DIY play stove I've seen yet! They should think about making these and selling them.

This is fantastic. I love the wood tones and how it modern and clean it looks. We built our daughter a play kitchen too, but I haven`t found a good solution for stove eyes yet. I thought coasters would be good but havent stumbled across the perfect ones. I like your solution, and hopefully I can get my hands on some circle decals.

Looks fantastic, I might sell them on my site! Imagine if my 7 year old boy woke up to that on Christmas morning, he'd love me!
