Look! Another Mies van der Rohe Dollhouse

mies-dollhouse-staircase.jpgWe were looking through the archives at Sweet Juniper this weekend (in lieu of, say, sending out our Christmas cards), and couldn't believe we'd somehow managed to miss this great replica of a Mies van der Rohe house, complete with floating staircase. This isn't the first time we've spied a dollhouse in the style of van der Rohe. Are there more out there? We wonder...

mies-dollhouse-side.jpgMade primarily from scraps of leftover wood, this dollhouse reportedly cost around $15. Says Jim about his motivation for tackling this project:

"...ever since my wife's cruel revelation about the woeful cardboard vehicles I make for Juniper, I have felt a need to redeem myself in terms of what I am able to make with my hands. So I decided to build Juniper a dollhouse that resembled our own home, a Mies van der Rohe shoe box whose lack of any ornament would make the job extremely simple."

And he has this to say about the result:

"...considering that my woodworking experience consists of about an hour watching the New Yankee Workshop and maybe half an episode of Bob the Builder, I don't think it turned out too bad. I love it when minimalist taste, thrift, and complete lack of craftsmanship all come together to form a happy trifecta."

Juniper seems pretty happy, too.

Ok - so I have to say that I really like this. Mostly because when the house is a blank slate/plain box then the child's imagination is allowed to flourish. I'd love to see what this dollhouse looks like in a few years after she's added "wallpaper" and "lights" and whatever else she comes up with.

I do dig the tiny little bedside table. I'm in love with those.
