But we suppose you're not desecrating books if you use ones that are on their last limbs like those with torn or missing pages. In the project above almost thirty books were used so you may have to hunt for awhile at garage sales to get an ample supply. If the headboard is for a twin bed then obviously you would need fewer.
You can find instructions for this project, appropriately, at Instructables.
That's freaking awesome! Especially if you use beat up books that are on their last legs. It's upcycling at its finest.

No cringing. I am a librarian and LOVE LOVE this. Very cool. And you are right one wouldn't feel so badly if it was from books that were on their last legs. Cool.

Another librarian says GREAT IDEA! And don't forget, not all books are "treasures" in the first place. Some books never should have been published in the first place and turning them into something like this is the best thing that could have happened to them...

And you could always do something cool with the pages that come out, too. That way you'd be using the whole book and you might feel less guilty about it. Like use them to decoupage a side table or some storage boxes or something. Though maybe not in the same room...could end up being too "theme-y."
Or if nothing else, shred them for compost or packing material.
