Create an ode to everyone's flying mammal with this simple bat costume. Not only is it easy peasy, it's super cute. To make this costume, you'll need:
• Black Leggings (or jogging pants)
• A long-sleeve plain black t-shirt (or sweatshirt)
• Two pieces of black felt rectangles, available at any craft store (about 50 cents each)
• Needle and thread
• Black puffy paint (optional)

To create your black wings, simply sew your felt onto the bottom of the sleeves, making sure you also sew the felt onto the shirt's sides. Cut the felt to create a wing-shape pattern on the edges and then add puffy paint to decorate the wings and give them more detail. Add the leggings, some face paint and there you go. Instant bat!
ok that is super cute. i also think ZOMBIE is an excellent last minute costume...just dirty and shred some clothes. i did a how-to DIY post on a baby zombie costume here...http://prudentbaby.blogspot.com/2009/10/diy-baby-zombie-costume.html

being a penguin is very simple as well. black sweatsuit, felt oval pinned to stomach of sweatshirt, beak (triangle of cardboard folded in half, covered with orange construction paper, punch hole in either side, tie elastic through holes for strap) and top it all off with a top hat and bow tie.

Dress them head to toe in white, use a wide black belt to tie a colored pillow to their back, and they're sushi!
Or make a cone hat in a bright color, find a top and pants to match, and they're a crayon.
Or dress them all in black, make a t-shirt mask, a plastic or foam sword, and they're a ninja!
Again head to toe in black, stuff a black sock and pin it to the back of the kid's pants, a little face paint for whiskers and a black nose, some felt ears stapled to a cheap headband, and they're a cat.
There are lots of ideas that are really simple, if you get creative.
