Look! Found Polystyrene Wall Art

042109-wallart.jpg High winds blew packaging material from a building site all around the home town of the Barker family. They pitched in and helped to clean up many of the pieces that became lodged in trees and shrubbery as the winds carried them all around. This piece however was too big to dispose of easily. Click through to see how they transformed it into a lightweight and eco-friendly art project instead!

The Barkers thought this piece would be ideal since it was thicker. During the process it still had pieces that came off, so they suggest doing this activity outside (unless it's windy) to help save you from vacuuming.

042109-wallart2.jpg The collected up all the bits of yarn they had lying around and started wrapping. They discovered that as long as they kept the string taught it would dig into the sides and kept the yarn from sliding off. They enlarged a hole which a branch had made, allowing the string to be wrapped through the middle as well.

042109-wallart3.jpg Because the whole piece is light, even though it's large, it's able to be hung directly on the wall without any problems or concern of it falling off and bonking anyone or anything on the head. It's a great way to reuse the massive amounts of packaging that come in boxes these days and gives idle hands something to do with their time!

Thanks for showing our work.
We have also made an outdoor version using florists ribbon.

We have more kid-friendly projects over at our family site - http://www.barker-family.info/stuffwemake/index.html
