It's funny how often one situation can completely turn into something else, quite unexpectedly. We suppose that is what's at the heart of parenthood -- surprise after surprise. And for the most part, the surprises are quite pleasant. What started out as an afternoon of pumpkin decorating soon became much more...
After buying a couple pumpkins from a local farmer, we sat with our son and began decorating them with some markers and paint. Once the pumpkins had dried, we placed them on our window pane. Soon enough, Agnes the cat was drawing attention to our newly found pumpkin admirer.

Rather than being upset his pumpkins were being eaten, our son was completely delighted that he could feed a neighborhood squirrel. (Thankfully, our paint and marker was non-toxic and somehow, the squirrel managed to avoid eating any of it!) This was probably the closest to a squirrel either of us had ever been --or the closest this particular squirrel had been to a human.

From a chance encounter, we took this moment of inspiration to go online and read more about squirrels. We then visited the library and checked out a book on squirrels. Serendipity -- it's a fine thing.
What has been your recent best unexpected moment?
what a wonderful moment! I'm sure your son will remember this forever. That squirrel cracks me up - he sampled ALL the pumpkins. lol

There's another picture I took where the squirrel's entire body is actually INSIDE the smaller pumpkin. It's hilarious. That squirrel was chowing down!

so cute - love the pictures of your son watching the squirrel!
my recent best unexpected moment? Hmm... last week when my husband suggested we go to my parent's home for Christmas (they live 11 hours away). It was such a sweet surprise and totally unexpected!

We had spent some time carefully planning our two-day visit to Sea World so we could take our 2,5 y.o daughter to feed dolphins. And what do you think she remembers? Two-second splash at the stingray pool while she was waiting for us to use the bathroom! She was telling EVERYONE that she touched the stingray for SIX MONTHS!! Go figure. She liked dolphins, too.
