Look! IKEA Trofast Doubles as Staircase

2009-05-06-trofast.jpg

We've always loved the look and dual function of a step Tansu chest - storage and staircase rolled into one beautifully crafted piece. It's an invention born out of necessity in small spaces. Look closely at this photo and you'll see a modern Tansu-style chest doubling as stairs too.

Look familiar? It's the popular IKEA Trofast storage system in the step combination. It seems the bottom steps of the staircase were removed and the Trofast was inserted for a cost-effective way to create additional, accessible storage.

What I want to know is where they got the unbelievably gorgeous screen!

I don't think I would trust a trofast to last very long as a staircase. I wonder if they had a similar frame built, to use the trofast bins, or if they'll replace as needed, or if the trofast is sturdier than I think it is.

i've seen other pictures of this place on apartment therapy... one shot is close enough that you can see how the trofast frame was reinforced to accomodate the extra weight/usage.
also - the house is in china, i think. i imagine the screen was purchased there.

I have stairs built on a similar principle, it's a set of boxes with stairs atop rather than traditional stringer-style stairs. However, these were custom done. I'm not sure I'd trust the safety of Trofast, even with reinforcements, personally.
