Look! Muji Baby Items

2007-04-20-muji.jpg

We received an overseas package, delivered in-person by our best friend who lives in Tokyo. Tearing through the bubble wrap, we found an assortment of goodies from one of our absolute favorites, Muji.

We've had a long-running love affair with Muji - visits to Muji stores in London, perusing the limited line at the MoMa Store, and even ordering from the UK-based site. None of these outlets, however, offer the Muji baby line of accessories and clothing.

Our Muji baby care package includes: wonderfully made tanktops and t-shirts, a kimono-style outfit, a sun hat, a fleece winter hat, stretchy diaper covers (our favorite), feeding utensils, a bib with expandable pocket, a sippy cup, bib clips, bath sponges...The Muji trademark carries through in their baby line. Functionality is key, yet design is never an afterthought.

Recent news that two Muji stores will open in New York later this year got us drooling, but we heard that they will not be carrying the baby line. (See Daddytypes - the NY stores will NOT carry baby items. sniffle.)

(Thanks, Lin!)

Oh, I LOVE Muji and these products look great. I'm disappointed that the NY Muji stores aren't going to carry them. Too bad.

we love love love muji kids' stuff, and have stocked up on our last two visits to tokyo (but it's just not enough!). our friend just returned from japan and sent us the best muji pajamas - they are like regular pajamas, but you can button the top and bottom together so your kid's tummy is not exposed at night. i love that idea.

Will maternity stuff be carried? If so, I highly recommend their maternity clothes to expectant moms (provided you can wear Japanese sizes, as there are only two: SM or ML, I wear the later and was a 2 pre-pregnancy). I ordered two pairs of AWESOME maternity pants from the muji website early on in pregnancy--had them sent to a friend in Japan and she shipped them to me--and they are the cornerstone of my pregnancy wardrobe. Unlike American maternity pants, they have this ingenious adjustable elastic waistband so I could wear them at 20 weeks and they still fit comfortably now at 34. They are also way cheaper than stuff of comparable quality in the US (even after you pay for intl shipping!). My friend also sent the cutest selection of muji toys you can imagine and the stripy pajamas mentioned above--which not only fasten together as described, but employ a number of very clever design features that help teach your toddler to put them on herself (large buttons and buttonholes in alternating colors so that it's easy to see which button corresponds to each hole, an ornamental pocket on the pants so it's easy to tell front from back, etc).

The muji online store is a bit confusing if you don't read Japanese but here's a PDF catalog of kid and maternity stuff to ogle. At least you'll know what to request next time a friend goes to Japan and asks what to bring back.
