Look! Snake-Proof Baby Crib

So, you think modern parents are overprotective? Check out this "snake-proof" baby crib from the early 1900s.

The patented crib was made in Columbus, Ohio and we've been fascinated wondering if this was an anomaly a hundred years ago or if snakes in cribs was a common problem. While certainly not the most inviting crib we've ever seen, the makers took care to include useful features like wheels, springs for a mattress, a top that folds down and a leather handle for moving.

The crib was sold on Ebay for around $200 to a seller named, appropriately enough, "snakemuseum." See more photos here.

I am sooooooooo glad my Mom didn't know about this when I was a baby.

It looks like a torture device - I'm assuming some sort of padding was in there? :)

I can see this being useful back in the day for newborns who don't move much...it's like a tiny screened-in porch. :)

I could see this being useful to parents in rural Texas where a million plus snakes live (especially if they had dirt floors or lived in a dug out like my great grandmother). Life was different. But yeah, it's scary looking now.

We currently use this crib for our 20 month old. We used it for the other children too. We of course never use the top, but we do joke about it a lot.
