Look! Using Orange in Kids' Rooms

2008-04-04-orange.jpg

Orange has certainly enjoyed a renaissance the past few years and has become the go-to gender-neutral color (surpassing green and yellow) for many designers of children's decor, accessories and toys. We saw this photo at Remodelista who points it out as a perfect example of using pops of this vibrant color in an otherwise neutral room.

If you like the look, check out some of the orange finds for kids that Remodelista has dug up.

What do you think - does orange have staying power? What do you predict will be the next cool color for kids?

Orange was the perfect accent color when I was planning my blue and brown nursery. I don't know that it has staying power, but I love that it is gender neutral and bright.

You can see my use of orange here:

We painted my son's room orange with one french blue accent wall (colors were from the Tintin label). I was such a Tintin freak when I was a child (still am), so there are posters, a painting I did, and lots of statuettes, etc. The orange was a bit vibrant at first, but the blue grounds it, and then we also painted some shelves in the same blue. This was all a couple of years ago, so I am sure he will aske for something new soon.

I love orange. My daughter's room is painted BM's "sweet orange" and I wouldn't change a thing. The color makes the room warm and sunny no matter what the weather outside.

I love orange. I'm having an orange and blue quilt made for my baby's nursery. I'm not going to paint it orange, but there will definitely be more orange in there. It's not yet easy to find orange crib bedding, though. There's a lovely set by Litto, but I'm not doing the bumper/pillow/blanket thing (the quilt is for the wall and for later) and it's only sold by the set. Anyway, I do think orange has staying power. I read somewhere that orange is the most common "favorite" color among small kids. As they get older blue becomes the most common favorite. I was one of those kids, I remember loving orange when I was little, but blue is my favorite color now. Although I still love orange, I got a tangerine KitchenAid mixer last year.

It has some cool orange baby items on it.

My oldest has loved orange since he was 2--he's almost 6 now. When we moved into our new home I let him look over the Benjamin Moore Affinity fan deck and he landed on buttered yam--a deep orange color. We painted the bottom of his walls in it and added a medium blue over the chair rail. His bedding has pops of orange as does the rug. We liked the color so much we put it in the kids' shared bathroom with white running bond & hex tiles. There are glass accent tiles in shades of orange and orange polka dots on the towels. With a green Keep Calm and Carry On poster over the toilet it's all pretty refreshing.

I don't know how long orange will be hot, but we love it here.

Our nursery is very light white with pale silver/blue walls and a light maple floor. I plan to add some soft cocoa and persimmon orange accents and I thought this orange table lamp would lend a nice glow:

i like the orange in the room above, but i'd say that the orange accents are the only thing keeping it from looking like this kid lives in some type of an institution.

I mean seriously how boring would that room be for a kid...

I love orange. My son's room is orange. Bright orange. I'll paint our room a rusty orange. Here's his room, I toned down the orange with some purple.

In response to these questions:

My 15 yr. old is definitely into orange and I'm seeing it gain popularity in teen designs, cell phones, etc. It was green...now evolving into orange...next will be? hmmm good question...yellow? a new shade of yellow - darker flourescent yellow...maybe..who knows...
