High Chairs: The Babylon

2007.04.13.nursery.babylon1.jpg

We are cheating! The Babylon high chair by Argington has actually been on AT:Nursery before, but in a top 10. But we think this chair is fabulous enough to deserve its very own entry!

Babylon chairs are made of highly durable Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified sustainable birch wood with a 100% non-toxic, water-based finish. But if that isn't enough for you, they have a lot more going for them than just their green-ness.

These chairs come in Birch, White, Walnut, Red Maple, Cherry finishes, and they are the only high chairs we have ever seen that can be pulled up to a kitchen island - a thoughtful feature for families lucky enough to have kitchen islands! Seat height can be adjusted from 36" all the way down to 17". And they support up to 250lbs of weight. That's a big baby!

Babylon high chairs are $198.00, and come with or without a cushion and tray.

I bought this chair because it was the only one I've ever found that goes up to kitchen counter height. Although the chair is beautiful, it is far from perfect. First of all, during assembly, the pre-drilled holes did not match up. So when you assemble it, the screws do not get a proper fit. My screws got completely stripped trying to make it work, and now I can't get them out. The company has acknowledged this problem but did not provide a solution for me.

Secondly, and most importantly, this chair is very easy to tip over. My 18 month old daughter was sitting in it and looked over the side to the floor. The whole chair tipped over to the side. Luckily I caught it. If they provided some sort of railing the way the Stokke seat or the Trip Trapp seat has, I think it would be much safer. But as a whole, this seat feels very lightweight and tippy. When my daughter is done, she pushes herself back from the counter and the whole chair slides back. I feel like she's be safer in a more heavy duty bar seat with a booster chair strapped on. I'm always nervous that the whole thing is going to tip over again.

On a final note, I did not realize that you could not attach the tray (which would make the chair safer) when the seat is at the higher positions.

Won't somebody make a better high chair that goes up to counter-top level? We had a clip on chair but it is a pain to take on and off all the time.

I forgot to mention that the cloth of the seat does not seem especially stain resistant, and you can not put it in the dryer. I did, it shrunk, and now the padding doesn't fit inside it. Not very parent-friendly.
