Kidishes, Kid-Friendly Tempered Glass

2009-07-kidishes.jpg

Plastic and melamine are great for kids because they're nearly indestructible and now there are many BPA-free options too, but they're still not safe for the microwave. If your house is like ours we find ourselves heating food in the microwave on our day-to-day adult plates and then transferring it to kid-friendly containers before it hits the table (and, sometimes, the floor). No one likes doing double dishes which is why we were excited to read about Kidishes - tempered glass dishware based on those used in French schools in the '60s and 70s.

Kidishes are offered in the U.S. by Zoë b Organic, a green and organic-focused company owned by Valerie Lecoeur. She remembered these dishes from her youth in France and her 18-month-old Sophie and six-year-old Zoë have been putting them to the test in their home.

Tempered glass is 4-5 times stronger than standard glass. Watch as Zoë fumbles a bowl and cup:

And, hooray, they're affordable. They come in sets of 4: plates ($14), bowls ($15) and tumblers ($12). Find them at Zoë b Organic.

this is great, but how does it work with a hard tile kitchen floor?

Actually, this is the scenario at my house exactly...and as a result, we have 4 complete sets of dishes (2 adult sets - one crappy, ugly, but ceramic and microwaveable; one is our wedding set that doesn't get used much. 2 kid sets - one set of cute melamine merimekko poppies, and one plain colored plastic). I've looked at correll, but grew up with it and just cringe to think of it...the sound of knives on that is worse than fingernails on a blackboard.

I'll have to check this out.
