For those of you moving away from plastic, consider reusable fabric bags for toting lunch and snacks. We've been doing this for a long time now, using the drawstring bag our son's pillowcase came in. It's lightweight, easy to clean and comes in a print he loves. But if you don't have one of these, the fabric snack bags by Plum Creek Mercantile may interest you.
Plum Creek Mercantile makes their bags from 100% cotton twill. There is no plastic lining. You can use them for almost any foods besides liquids and soft fruits. Just machine wash or handwash. These snack bags come in different fabrics (the robots are our favorite) and sizes and have a velcro closure.
This could also make a fairly simple DIY project. Let us know in the comments section if you have made anything like this yourself.

Nice idea, but I can't help to wonder: Wouldn't it be easier to use a solid container instead? I don't think fabric would work well with too watery or too greasy stuff, say cucumber sticks or cookies. And I certainly wouldn't risk ruining the insides of my bag with grease from a slice of ham that could slide off my sandwich. Other than that, it could work with plain bagels or alike stuff, but not much else.

One would think it would be easier to use a solid container, but containers get spilled by toddlers in about three seconds flat. This is a great idea! I haven't found anything yet that comes close to the ease of a ziploc bag - until now. I think I'd turn them inside out before washing so all the crumbs get out.
Perhaps oilcloth would be a good material for this - with the shiny side on the inside of the bag? You could then just rinse it out...
