Weaning Cubes

2007.05.22.nursery.weaningcubes.jpgHere is a clever idea. Weaning cubes let you freeze and unfreeze baby food in individual size portions.

How handy are these if you make your own baby food? Each snap-lid container holds one ounce of food, and the handy tray makes stacking these in the freezer a breeze. We first saw these in the UK, but recently stumbled upon a US distributer, who markets them as 'baby cubes'.

They would be equally great for portioning toddler meals. Baby cubes are dishwasher and microwave safe, and just $6.95.

I used these and thought they were useful. I also re-use plastic gerber baby food tubs - good for freezing bigger portions. both are problematic if you think too much about whether or not plastic is poison. The UK name is odd - they use "wean" to mean "start solids" whereas in the US we generally use it to mean "stop breastfeeding".

In the interest of keeping tiny tiny kitchens and freezers uncluttered, a plain old ice cube tray serves the same purpose and will retain its usefulness for a long time. Pop the frozen cubes in a freezer bag, and then you can thaw one at a time.

Kristin - We love these at our house. Very useful for homemade baby food and taking portions with you.

Not sure why these are considered a good design- ice cube trays do the same thing with less plastic and can be reused for other functions...i.e. making ice. Simplicity!

I concur with the ice cube trays and freezer bags as the preferred way. Our twins go through a lot of food cubes, and this looks very involved. I'd hate to wash all those little individual compartments - the ice cube tray is bad enough (even with a dishwasher) I have 4 trays and they get the job done nicely. If you need larger portions, you just thaw out more cubes.

They would be useful in the long run, too, for freezing homemade stocks and broths, etc.

In France, they have an amazing all-frozen foods store called Picard which offers tons of different frozen pureed vegetables in cubes. I just wish they'd open some branches here in the States!

I bought these cubes and threw them out a few days later - the lids just don't stay shut in the freezer. I put the amount below the max line but the lids just wouldn't stay shut. The amount that actually fits is just too small in my opinion.

I have used old ice cubes containers. One helpful tip:when the food is frosen, take all of them out into another container or a plastic bag, so that you can portionize. If you leave it in the container it is difficult to take only one out!
