While recently visiting my friend who is a first-time mother, one thing she raved about and wishes she would have invented herself is this mesh fruit feeder:
Her little guy is 7 months old, just starting to teeth, and loves fresh fruit!
Rather than trying to puree everything for him, she discovered this mesh contraption -- and baby Charlie goes to town on his favorite fruits (thanks also to the melon baller, another "thank god this exists" for my friend). More than just good for eating, this fruit feeder seems to entertain for long stretches of time, too.
We found a similar baby safe feeder here at Modern Baby & Home for $8.99.
Anyone else a fan?
Also good in the mesh feeder: frozen grapes. The mesh gets disgusting pretty fast though when you put things like mango in there.

we had the munchkin fresh food feeder (got it at target):

and it was heaven sent when my son was teething! we would chill or freeze fruits (or even ice cubes) for him to gnaw on and it worked better than pumping him full of tylenol =) the only setback is cleaning them... it can get especially messy and tricky to clean with bananas!

Our son, Griffin, really loves fruit and soft veggies through the mesh feeder. The only downside is we have found the mesh nearly impossible to clean well. We've tried soaking it, putting them in the dishwasher, scrubbing by hand, and there is usally some food stuck in the seams of the mesh. We tend to toss them and buy the refills so they are clean for each use.

Ugh. That thing got so gross...and the kid was a mess, too. It did keep her happy for extended periods of time, though.

We had it and it was such a mess. My daughter never really liked it and I didn't like the mess. After a couple of tries, we were both done.

I love the mesh feeder. Trader Joe's frozen mangos are cut to a good size and are great when teething. We had both the Munchkin and Sassy mesh feeder. The plus with the Sassy is that it has replaceable mesh nets and a lid if you want to put it in the diaper bag. The opening is also a little bit bigger than the Munchkin feeders.
I agree - bananas are the worst to clean out of these things!

By far my favorite baby shower gift I received!
I agree that it got gross with fruit, but we used ice cubes or frozen chamomile tea ice cubes. And here in Miami, the melted ice water dripping down her chin helped cool her off.
The great thing about the one pictured is it comes apart for cleaning and it's easy to replace the mesh. The munchkin one doesn't.

My kiddo wants no part of that mesh feeder. I tried with a few different things and finally gave up. Since all babies are different, it's worth a try but not worth registering for tons of replacement bags if you're not sure how it will work.

I didn't like this thing. It was super messy and got really grody quick. I think I only used it once or twice for each kid.

We tried various brands all were rejected by our little one. Difficult to clean as well.

Love it! We have both the one pictured, and a yellow one that for the life of me I can't remember the brand...and I'm too lazy to go look at it. The one pictured I thought was better because I could attach it to my son's high chair with one of those sippy cup straps or even a pacifier leash. We never tried bananas, I was warned against them, but the best thing we put in it was apple chunks, he LOVED them! The bag did turn slightly brown over time, but I had replacement bags, so we'd just put a new one in every so often. This was great for restaurants, a really good distraction, it would take quite a while for him to eat what was in there. He's 2 now, but his sister is 2 months, so we'll definitely be using it again when she's older! I think he used it from about 6 months till almost a year old.

messy. good for throwing food against the wall.

You don't even need to use a mesh feeder - infants over about 6-7 months of age are capable of handling soft finger foods, you don't even need to cut them into tiny pieces - about the size of a french fry is just right for them to grip, they will break down or spit back out anything that is too large to swallow. I started feeding my son table food at 7.5 months and he loves it! Check out http://babyledweaning.com/

I did mostly finger foods for my LO too. (Thus skipping the puree phase. Like the previous post suggests.)
But I loved this for teething. I'd put frozen camomile tea or frozen fruit chunks in there and he'd go to town.

amen to the baby led weaning comment. this just seems messy and unnecessary. my little boy has been eating fruit and vegetables unpureed since he was 6 months old.
