Banana Guard: Practical Or B-A-N-A-N-A-S?

101509-banana.jpg Awhile back we talked about the Banana Bunker, although most of you weren't super on board with it's... um... suggestive shape, we still like the idea of keeping our fruit protected from the dark depths of a backpack. This one even claims to fit most sizes of banana...

We hadn't really thought about the new wave of protective banana covers fitting assorted sizes, but it does make sense. Curved bananas slide right in while straighter versions adapt quite nicely. They retail for $14.95 and come in red, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink.

Even if you're not into having an extra case for your banana, they could still be handy as a mold for other culinary kid adventures, like making a banana made of jello! There's probably more, but the idea of a Jello-banana is making the kid in us giggle, as well as the adult, but for whole other reasons!

What do you think? Are they practical or unnecessary? Let us know in the comments below!

I have one, it's great. No more smushed banana in my diaper bag.

Get one off eBay for cheap. I love mine, although I get a bit sick of the comments when I take it to work. It's supposedly scientifically designed to fit almost any banana, regardless of shape or size, and I have never found one that doesn't fit it.

It has ventilation holes all along it so I don't think it would be particularly great for use as a mould, though.

I'm almost ready to buy one, except the boogie nights banana guard logo is holding me back...

What if your bananas don't fit this...

An awesome Canadian-made product.
Speaking from someone who owns TWO (bought at Vancouver's Granville Island)... I love it!

My husband thought I was nuts when I bought one here in Sweden. Still does. (Everyone, including the preschools, use them.) I love it. Every banana has fit so far.

I live in the UK and we have a couple of these. I bought them in an outdoors shop for about £4 ($6) maybe four years ago. They are great for throwing a couple bananas for the kids in the diaper bag or purse.

I do use them a lot, but not sure if I would have initially bought one to try for $15 each! That seems really steep.

I got a Banana Guard as a gag gift a few years ago, and I've been using it ever since to schlep bananas to work and whatnot -- even before I had kids. (What can I say? I love bananas.) It's awesome. Mine's probably held hundreds of bananas of all shapes and sizes, and they've always fit. I still see them for sale, usually for around $10-12 here in Canada.

I have one and get teased about it endlessly but it really is great for throwing a banana in my bag in case my two yr old needs a snack on the go. Haven't found a banana that doesn't fit (sometimes you might need to snip the stalk but the banana itself always fits somewhere along the curve).

The idea about using it as a mold is creative. As for having a case just for my kids banana..it's another one of those useless "kitchen gadgets" - I'll just stick to a hard cased lunch box which should do the same thing.
