In our home, pancakes are a special breakfast item reserved for the weekend. We've tried them all ways - blueberry inside, with homemade strawberry sauce, whipped cream, chocolate chips...you name it. But this idea is new to us.

Make alphabet-shaped pancakes this weekend and play with your food! All you need in addition to your regular pancake batter is a turkey baster. We found this great idea over at Avocado & Papaya blog. It looks so fun we might have to try it for dinner one of these nights.

My dad always made pancakes with my initials and it's the reason I loved them!

My mom always made them with flat slices of apples inside. SO GOOD!

If you put the letter onto the griddle (letter facing backwards), wait about 20 seconds, then pour on top like a normal pancake, when you flip it over the letter will be dark surrounded by a lighter colored rest of the pancake. Those are always a hit!

My dad used to make us "funny-face pancakes" when we were little. He'd mix up the batter, then take a small portion and add some cocoa powder to create a chocolate batter. He'd then use the chocolate batter and make designs on the pan -- funny faces, our initials, animals, whatever -- and then once it had set, pour the regular batter over top. Flip as per usual and ta-dah, tasty pancakes with a hint of chocolate, plus entertainment! One of my favourite memories from childhood.
