We're squeezing out the last bits of summer but a rain storm every now and then has kept us inside. On those occasions we always thought it would be nice to do some baking but, despite crossed fingers, always was missing an ingredient or two.

Then we spotted this idea on the Small Notebook - making your own pre-measured baking mixes! Just gather a bunch of glass jars (or ziploc bags or other container of choice). Measure out your dry ingredients (hold the yeast) in assembly line fashion. Label your containers and you've got the base mixes for your favorite recipes right at your fingertips. Just add your wet ingredients when you're ready to bake.

I just had this same idea! It's one of those so obvious things that I wish I'd thought of before, since I've received them as gifts but never thought to make it for myself.
Also great for when company appears unexpectedly and you want to whip up a quick dessert.

I've done this for granola mixes. I add everything but the wet stuff. It's so nice to have a supply nearly ready to go instead of starting over from scratch.

Funnily enough, I just started doing that with cooking, by accident. I started browning onion with garlic the other night, then plans changed. I turned the heat off, and thought - if it's going to sit in the fridge a day or two why not let it seep in some extra flavour? I added some basil, then put it in a container, and I happened to have leftover canned tomato in another container. I looked at them sitting all together with some other stuff, and thought - there's my next meal prep done right there! I might do that more often:P

I do this with a delicious pasta recipe.
I do up a batch of 6-8 marinades and freeze them. Then all I have to do is cut up a few veggies and the actual cooking.
With 2 boys plus a small baby, ease and speed is where it's at!

I've been doing this for a while too, it's so easy when I need to whip up a batch of cookies of brownies, or even soups and sauces.
Tip: enter "gifts in a jar recipes" in web browser and you'll find loads of ideas.
