Green Ideas: Waste-Free Lunch Kit

2008-09-10-kidskonserve.jpg

A friend tipped us off to the Waste-Free Lunch Kit by Kids Konserve. It's a good looking reusable lunch kit for those of us trying to reduce the use of plastics and waste.

The Lunch Kit includes a recycled cotton sack, cloth napkin, 16 oz. stainless steel beverage bottle, food kozy for wrapping sandwiches, two stainless steel food containers, and recycled aluminum name tag. We love the styling and the flexibility the various containers offer.

Our only complaint is that it doesn't come in different colors for families with more than one child. It's $40 here.

Thanks, R.L.!

I've always appreciated the fact that my daughter's schools and camps have (for all but 1) provided hot lunches (I hate making lunches!), but this post has made me realize how much better for the environment it is to do so.

The lunch kit above is the first truly waste-free lunch kit I have ever seen -- which demonstrates how hard it can be to achieve that with a packed lunch.

But with hot school lunches, there are no paper or plastic bags or drink boxes that get thrown out, I don't buy packaged servings in the supermarket, instead, everything is bought in bulk, and served and eaten from washable vessels. Plus, the children get a hot nutritious (and often organic) meal.

(and yes, these are really good meals -- the French and the Swiss take their school meals seriously! No burgers, fries or pizza on the menu).

Hot nutritious meals in schools, the kind Jamie Oliver has been championing, are something we should really push for in North America.

I love it!!!

If I hadn't just invested in very very cute Bento boxes for my 3 kids I would totally order this. Our kids school went 'garbage free' this year, so we're not allowed to send anything with garbage (well, we can but the garbage gets sent home with the kid).

I am really enjoying being creative with what goes into the kids lunches...

ok so with the one cloth napkin...are you expected to run a load of laundry every night to wash this thing? maybe eventually they'll sell a pack of just the napkins.

I have an online bento store for anyone who is looking for kid-sized bentos. I have some new ones in and they work really well for little ones to elementary school aged kids. I'll also be stocking cloth napkins in a few weeks that will come in packs of 5.

You can find me at http://www.petit-tableau.ecrater.com. I also have a kids lunch/bento related blog at http://www.petit-tableau.com.
