Octonaut Cake and Cupcakes by Coco Cake

We know that kids will like what they like, but if our son is interested in underwater adventures we're hoping to steer him toward the Octonauts and away from...well, a certain other character (hint: rhymes with "OrangeGlob EclairDance").

A little girl named Dakota is also an Octonauts fan - so much so that she wanted an Octonauts party for her third birthday. Lyndsay of Vancouver's Coco Cake was hired to create a fitting dessert and made this Octonaut cake and character cupcakes - pretty amazing! You can see more photos here. (Who are the Octonauts? Find out here.)

We know what you're thinking - that Lynday's a professional with tons of training and experience and you could never make something like this. Well, she is self-taught and no doubt practiced a lot, but it goes to show that passion can take you far. If you're even the tiniest bit interested in cupcakes, baking or decorating cakes, you'll find fantastic inspiration on Lyndsay's blog, Coco Cupcakes. (We especially recommend checking out her pizza cake, hamburger cake, Where the Wild Things Are cake and her cat cake portrait of Harold the Cat.)

Cute! Love the cupcake blog!

But, to be perfectly honest, if your kid likes Spongebob I say just let him like it. Everyone these days wants to boycott the popular characters just because they're popular. But take it from a girl raised by a parent who made it her mission in life to get me every lunch box EXCEPT the one with the cool, overexposed, commercial character on the front - those are YOUR issues and preferences. Not your kid's.

We ordered some cupcakes from Lyndsay for a baby shower a couple weeks ago. Everyone loved them and they were super cute too!

OK, wow!

I just wish they could do things as amazing as this with regular frosting because fondant tastes bleh.

If you look carefully, you will see that the fondant cutouts are resting on generous buttercream swirls :-)

(I still dream of her Hungry Caterpillar cupcakes!)
