My Great Outdoors: Liz's Sunny Family Backyard

2009greatoutdoorsbadge.gifName: Liz

Location: Valencia, California

Type of space: Backyard

Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: When we bought our little house, the back yard was overrun with weeds and in really bad shape. We've spent three years amending the soil, planting native flowers for bees & butterflies, and hanging bird & bee houses to welcome our outdoor neighbors. This Spring we finally built raised beds for veggies....

My dream is to make gazpacho (my absolute favorite Summer meal) entirely from veggies in our garden. We're growing bell peppers, cucumbers, chilies, carrots, green beans, peas, cauliflower, squash and three different types of tomatoes. We also have basil, strawberries & mint in pots nearby.

We spend most of our Spring & Summer hours outdoors, reading to our three-year-old, Dash, on a picnic blanket, grilling up yummy dinners, and gorging on watermelon.

How did you create it?:
It's been a slow process. Whenever we see a native plant that we think could thrive, we pick it up. We've tried to be really thoughtful about how we use our space before jumping into any big ideas or purchases. It's been a little difficult to be patient and watch our garden evolve so slowly, but it's been completely worth it.

Recommended store, site, product or resource?
Well, obviously, Apartment Therapy & Ohdeedoh are a great inspiration. I also love hardware stores for inspiration. Sunset magazine is a great help when it comes to garden ideas for SoCal.

Thank you! It was pretty easy to make--Just a few yards of clearance fabric pieced together helter skelter & some grommets at the top.

i just moved to your area, and it's been a challenge trying to personalize my yard and not make it look so cookie-cutter. your fun and functional yard gives me hope. i love the tent, and your garden looks like it's coming along swimmingly.
