Alex's Room

High end nursery war advances. At the Architectural Digest Home Design Show last Friday, we got to check out new stuff from the only nursery furniture company in attendance (that we saw): Duc Duc...

Leaping off from their cool rockers and cribs shown last year, Duc Duc is getting bigger with complete room sets for children, including new desks. Watch out, David Netto!

Bed, dresser, desk and chair complete each line, while a huge dining table transforms for full on kid time art sessions. None of these items are yet online.

duc duc's stuff is terrific looking but actually getting the furniture into your home is challenging. lead time is long long long and customer service is not great unless you shout to be heard and call them a lot, and still they weren't that accomodating. we invested in a rocker and armoire for our newborn and waited 5 months for the rocker to arrive. we're still waiting on the armoire (6 + months), as they delivered the wrong one the first time around. The company has a lot of pretentious claims (see website) for a group of people who can't get their act together. though the furniture is beautiful and well made, i was not impressed.

Like gogirl, we too have and a *BAD* experience with ducduc. We ordered a dresser in August, and were told 12 weeks to delivery into our house. Our baby arrived in December, and the dresser was no where to be found having not been delivered and no word on the status. Call after call after the first, second, third and fourth missed delivery dates we were told "it'll definitely be there in 3-4 more weeks." After each missed revised delivery date, we called and spoke to the national sales manager. All they offered was a lousy 10% discount after the third missed delivery date. After the last missed delivery date, they finally shipped the dresser one week past their delivery estimate. The shipping from Conneticuit to Washington DC took 3 weeks. We were promised 2-3 days delivery to our house given the 4 month delay in manufacture past the original delivery estimate. After 3 weeks to do an 8 hour drive, the dresser arrived damaged from shipping and broken due to the drawer slides not being installed correctly in the factory.

So it's been 7 months, and we saw a glimpse of what a dresser might look like in our 3 month-old's room. I'm guessing from their past track record, we'll see the next dresser delivery attempt around September sometime.

And everyone we spoke to at ducduc just had a "it's not our problem" attitude. The canned answer seems to be "it'll be there in 3-4 more weeks" no matter what the real situation might be.

Their stuff looks great, and the green claims are nice, but if they can't deliver in 7 months something they say will be ready in 3 months, all that styling isn't worth a damn.

First off, thanks Apt. Therapy for the write-up!
We appreciate it. And are fans of Apt. Therapy here at the duc.
Secondly we hear you loud and clear!
Last summer we opened our very own plant and at the same time our orders increased dramatically and quite simply we got behind.  All of our designs are custom, hand made pieces and this takes time.
Now less than 6 months after we opened our factory we are working to expand our facility so our lead times will be lower.
We sincerely apologize for the delays and any inconveniences this may have caused our customers.

yes, lj i totally agree. i was basically blown off until i went down to their showroom to find out what the hell was going on - the last thing you want to be doing when you just had a baby! and the apologies they offered seemed flimsy and stock (see above). they didn't offer any kind of discount, compensation, not even a word from any of the company's principles. they could not have cared less -- fobbing me off on the nicest, sweetest assistant in the company. i've now been waiting 2 additional months for my armoire, and i still don't know when it will arrive. having a baby is a special time, and when i think about how aggravated i have been trying to obtain this overpriced furniture, it makes me feel like a total sucker. david, if you really care about your company's reputation, perhaps following up yourself on current outstanding orders would be a start.

Gogirl, I'd stay on them and call your way through the phone menu until you reach someone. That's how I finally connected with the COO who seems to have poked the hornets nest enough to get some action and response for me, if being told 4 more weeks and we'll up the discount to 15% is action. And we had to ask for each of these discounts, none were forth coming from the company in light of the horrible situation they've put us in. There's a whole writeup of my ordeal on the daddy types blog, if you care to hear the whole story and latest updates.

I would have my credit card company do a charge-back on this order and give my business to somebody else!
From my experience with Duc Duc they are very pretentious and snobbish, customer service is absolutely horrible!

I would NEVER ever even look at duc duc furniture again, as so many other people I ordered it and 4 months later after a 4 month wait and still NOTHING and they never call back. It has been the worst experience EVER. I would not recommend it to my worst enemy.

I have a retail store and I can write a book on all the things that went wrong with all my orders with them. I had clients that waited 10-14 weeks and then were told that it would be another 14 weeks, and then 2 more weeks and then it would come in broken or the paint smelled. They NEVER call me back, never help me be able to help clients by giving them lenders. i have had the store for 5 years and have never worked with such a BAD company. Its one thing when things are running late or you have "issues" with Plant but a whole other to be honsest with people and try to help them and just maybe if its not to much TO CALL PEOPLE BACK.

And by the way if you can't keep up with your orders WHY AND WHEN do you have time to make new stuff?????

posted by Michelle on 2007-03-14 14:49:23

i guess you all would call me lucky - my ducduc order came off without a hitch. i love the changing table and crib i bought, and the wait time was only about six weeks. it sounds like maybe they're having some issues because of a new plant (perhaps i bought when they had some other manufacturing arrangement?), but in my opinion, the products are worth the wait... good quality, styling, and functionality. my babe's nursery is lookin' sweet!

As ducduc is one of the only companies to produce their amazing line of products in the U.S by trained artisans, I must congratulate them for the end result. Their leadtime may have been a bit longer than anticipated but was compensated by their craftmanship and their extremly hospitable customer service. I willbe happy to place orders over and over again.

Christina, you sound like a Duc Duc sales person trying to cover up... This doesn't really count.
You should be spending your time helping customers and not blogging...

Could not agree with Erica anymore :) I as MANY people out there has had a bad experience with DUC DUC. Ordered and was told 3-4 months 8 months later got it and the it smelled sooooooo bad. We aired the room out for 2 weeks and still smelled. We ended up returning it and getting a set from Oeuf. Oeuf came in 1 week and I just love it. Never mind the price difference. Christina and Victoria are so clearly from Duc Duc just trying to save a lost cause.

Well, I am definitely NOT a salesperson and I did have a good experience. First we got a PJ dresser which we loved! Then the playtable and two chairs and finally a crib. We got them all at different times and had no problems other than a slightly longer wait time than companies. Our kids love their table and chairs and we love how it makes a mundane playroom look cooler.

I'm disappointed to hear others had problems, but it's definitely not the only duc duc experience out there. Hopefully they're figuring it out over there.

Duc Duc is really out of control, I have had so many issues with them that the sight of thier stuff makes me ILL. TRUST me there are soooo many other cool kids lines out there you do not want to deal with DUc Duc. I waited so long and it was like pulling teeth to get any type of call back form them. I ended up getting my money back and also going with oeuf, which I just love. My friend ordered their $6000 Dylan collection and it came with the holes in the wrong place. There really is just NO reason that that should have happeded. Its a $6000 not an IKEA set. If anyone is brave enough to order thier stuff Good LUCK

Wow - I guess I'm one of the lucky one's too! My changing table and crib arrived over the last two weeks and we are thrilled!! We did order a few month earlier from the norm as I heard they had a longer lead time but it's well worth the wait. It's the most beautifully crafted furniture in our home. I'm sorry to hear these people have been left frustrated when I'm so happy. I guess we just have to chalk it up to a small business's growing pains. I hope they can figure it out so more people and enjoy this wonderful product. Thanks DucDuc!!!

Any positive comment about ducduc on this site is most likely bogus, and written by one of their staff members. The only first hand accounts I've heard of this company are complete horror stories. Someone needs to put a stop to this sorry excuse for a furniture company. I reccommend everyone goto the Better Business Bureau with their complaints(www.bbb.org)

ugly furniture, and even worse customer service

First comment is suggesting babygeared.com...

Unfortunately, the babygeared.com has serious customer service issues. Currently, babygeared.com has an unsatisfactory record with the Atlanta BBB. Consumers probably want to consider this prior to shopping with Babygeared.com. They will take your order, and your money, but you will never receive your merchandise. :-)

We are researching these issues with the BBB, as the information reported in these claims is inaccurate.

We were very disheartened to see that just anyone can slander a person or business on the internet leaving no recourse and that such activity can tarnish what has been a good reputation for 7 years with thousands of satisfied customers.
