Baby Mattresses Go Luxe

2007-03-01-mattress.jpg Last week the WSJ reported a trend among baby mattress manufacturers toward the high-end. These luxury mattresses feature things like high inner spring count (just like for adults) and organic materials.

According to experts quoted in the article, these features may appeal to parents but won't mean much to babies. The article says the most important feature when choosing a crib mattress is firmness and how tightly it fits within the crib (no gaps).

The article reviews four brands falling in the luxe category with prices ranging from just over $100 to $700. Read the full article here.

I don't know that you need to spend that much, but the experts don't mention that cheap mattresses contain toxic fire retardant chemicals which off-gas. (in fact they are so bad the usda has given manufacturers until 2008 to come up with an alternative, and the chemicals are outlawed in Europe) Organic mattresses start at around $200.
