News: Maclaren Recall Affects Strollers Sold Since 1999

Stroller industry giant Maclaren announced this morning a massive voluntary recall affecting every stroller they've made since 1999 - that's over one million. The stroller hinges "pose a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller."

Own a Maclaren? Read on for what to do...

The CPSC reports that fifteen children have been injured in the U.S. including twelve incidents of fingertip amputation. To address the safety issue Maclaren is issuing hinge cover kits to all consumers.

If you own a Maclaren, you should contact them via the web or phone (toll free, 877-688-2326 9am – 5pm EST) to receive the repair kit.

It's unclear to us how distribution of the repair kits is being handled outside of the U.S. so we'd advise those customers to find contact info for Maclaren in their country at their global website.

The way maclarens fold is just about the same as any other umbrella stroller... would that lead me to believe that any umbrella stroller poses this same risk?

So does that mean that the biggest door manufacturer in the US should recall 25 million doors because they have exposed hinges and it can "pose a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child" when the consumer is opening and closing a door?

I feel for the parents who have been affected by the hinges on their Macs, but accidents happen every day and we just have to do our best to teach the kids to be safe.

I read this story on the paper this morning and it made me a little mad. I understand it's a big risk if a kid gets hurt while the stroller is in normal use and the kid is sitting on it. But why must there be a recall if a kid's finger gets caught while the stroller is being unfolded? It's the same as getting your finger caught in a door. Heck, I get my fingers caught very often (folding chairs and tables come to mind), but do I expect the manufacturer to start a recall? Please.... I feel for those children who got hurt, really, but this is a little paranoid...

We just bought a Maclaren last month and love it, so I was disappointed to hear about the recall. My husband and I tried folding up our stroller and playing with the hinge, and we couldn't figure out how it might pose a danger. That being said, our baby is never near the stroller when it is being folded or unfolded. I was able to order the hinge cover kit on Maclaren's website, and it is supposed to arrive withing 5-7 business days.

a kid at the park tripped over my maclaren stroller and broke one of the wheels or wheel parts. anyone know of an easy way to get the parts replaced? i've heard dealing with maclaren is user-UN-friendly if not impossible.

my son is 4yo now so the wheel thing made for a natural transition out of the stroller, but i don't like to throw out--and not be able to pass on--an otherwise functional stroller with many more miles in it, though i have thought of offering it for parts.

I just went to the Maclaren website to register for the recall. FYI they are not refunding money or anything, so don't feel too bad for them. Instead, they are offering an additional part that you can attach to the stroller to cover the hinge. Totally worth it to sign up! My son's finger got caught in our Maclaren and despite the dismissive comments above, it was very scary. The stroller snaps and locks closed so quickly and tightly that it is hard to focus on getting it unsnapped while your child is screaming in pain (especially when a panicky grandmother who perhaps closed the stroller too quickly is also freaking out). No finger amputations here, but he does still have a small scar two years later.
