TV Turnoff Week

2007.04.24.nursery.tv.jpgDid you know that it is TV Turnoff week? We probably should have posted this yesterday, but you know, we got distracted trying to catch up with all the Look What I Did episodes on our Tivo.

But it is indeed TV Turnoff Week, and we have been thinking about what that means for families with children, because according to Adbusters, in 2005, the average US child spent more time in front of the television (more than 1,500 hours) than in school (900 hours) [Neilson, 2005]. It is chilling.

But this week is not only about turning off the television, but also the XBox, the Wii, the iPod, and every other piece of passive entertainment for seven days.

Televisions in American homes are turned on for an average of 8 hours a day...is yours? Could you, or your family, go without television et al. for seven days? Are you doing it - if so, let us know how it is going via the comments.

I see they are also advocating that laptops go off! Uh oh!
I do wonder how Wii's fit into this schema--we don't have one but we played a friend's, and it seemed very un-passive.
I wonder too if those of us in small spaces use the TV in the same way as families in larger houses. I know that TV watching will have to be different in our 1-bedroom apt than it was in the 5-br house I grew up in, where everyone over the age of 12 had his or her own TV, stereo, and eventually, computer.

Bad timing. "Heroes" just came back from seven week hiatus.

We are going to do our best in keeping the TV off for the first several years of our little one's life (he's due in August). That is, at least while he's awake. Although we don't watch much TV, I don't think I could convince my husband to turn it off for a whole week - especially if he couldn't use his computer, too!
