We love books -- buying them, giving them reading them, so when we discovered Barefoot Books we were absolutely delighted.
Barefoot Books was founded by Nancy Traversy and Tessa Strickland, in 1993, who left the corporate world to work in something they believed in. Traversy and Strickland feel that it's never too early to introduce children to other cultures and that from a very young age, children can appreciate art, music and language which is why all of Barefoot Books are so beautiful and inspirational.
Barefoot Books features diverse authors from all over the world. And not only do the books feature good old-fashioned storytelling, they are also visually stunning. We think it's great that each book is beautifully illustrated and introduces children to many wonderful cultures that exist in the world.
We're fans of The Story of Divaali, Child's Book Of Blessings, Goddesses -- but our favorite is I Took the Moon for a Walk.
The Barefoot Books Web site also features an Art Shop which showcases many of their artists' work. And if you're looking for more than books, Barefoot Books also sells puzzles, puppets, gift wrap and CDs.
And we love the fact that Barefoot Books is mindful of their carbon footprint. They print from ancient-forest friendly sources, their books are shipped by boat instead of plane and their offices are run in an eco-friendly manner.
They have a really sweet brick and mortar store in Cambridge MA. The store is very close to the Portar Exchange, which has a bunch of Japanese noodle/sushi/curry stands. The pair make for a great afternoon out.
