apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#4 - Sam's Chocolate Crash Pad

Name: Sam, 4-months-old
Location: Brooklyn, NY

Why I chose these colors for the nursery:
Before this room was a nursery, it was a very dark, chocolate brown office. We loved it, the walls seemed to recede but the room had a relaxing, enveloping feeling. When we realized the room would have a new purpose and occupant we decided to keep the wall color. We loved the idea of a creating high contrast space that would be enjoyable for our son to discover as his eyesight developed. It has been amazing to watch him be absorbed by more of his environment each week.

We also wanted the deep brown wall color as a neutral backdrop to harmonize all of the bright, happy (occasionally garish) colors found in most baby stuff today. Our palette developed further after falling in love with the print fabric I ended up using to make his bedding. We pulled the teal and green accent colors from this print and contrasted them with bits of orange to add a little spark. We hoped we could create a pleasant, restorative space without using a "babyish" pastel palette and are very happy with the result.

Two Good Color Tips:
Look around. Look at fabric print color combinations, photographs, paintings: anything that uses colors together in a way that you like.

Repeat an accent color in as many places and textures as possible. Don't be too rigid about making an exact color match, more tones of the same color add depth.

Color(s) and brand(s) of paint used in the room:
Wall color: Cliveden Virginia Soil, eggshell finish by Valspar at Lowe's
Trim color: Simply White by Benjamin Moore

Jus Beautiful! I don't have any kids yet, but I will put this entry in my scrap book for future nursery room inspirations. Love your color choices and the contrast that you've created in this room. Is the crocodile on the wall painted or is that fabric?

Those are my dream colors but I wasn't as bold as you when the moment came and I had to pick a color for my 16 month old Sam(antha). Going with a more neutral grayish tone instead.
I love the lighting. Where did you get those?

Wonderful...I love how it's definitely for a child, yet not childish. Just perfect.

Holy cow, they've got almost the entire Ugly doll collection. But they're missing my favourite: Icebat!

Love this room. Chocolate brown and chartreuse is one of my favourite colour combinations. And the alligator is awesome.

I believe I've seen the alligator - made from wallpaper as are a collection of animals at www.rompbkln.com It looks terrific in their room. I've been tempted to buy one of the menagerie, but I'm waffling on wallpaper - both putting it on initially and getting it off later when we don't want it anymore. So far, I've used some of the wall decals and have been happy.

As I spy all the gorgeous Nurseryworks stuff I realise it is a really expensive nursery, but it's a really beautiful one too.

Wow, thanks so much for all the positive comments!

To answer the questions above:

The crocodile is from Romp, rompbklyn dot com. It was surprisingly easy to put up, it comes in three pieces with great instructions. They have all sorts of animals and vintage wallpaper options. I was prepared for it to be a big project and it was really not hard at all, taking maybe a half hour to put up. Im not sure about getting it off...

The ceiling light is from inmod dot com, it is in their "imported" section. The table lamp is from Ikea and gussied up with grosgrain ribbon.

The mobile is from blablakids, they make the most adorable stuff. The style is called Big jungle Mobile but I am not sure where you can purchase it as it was a very generous gift.

I made the blinds and bedding, I am very proud of the quilt which I made and modeled after a Gee's Bend pattern. The main print used in the bedding is called 2-d Zoo by Alexander Henry. You can find it on ebay. I matched that with solid teal cotton (to imitate a really chic bedding set of all solid teal I saw at Pomme in Brooklyn) and bright green grosgrain trim.

All of Sam's extended family are Ugly doll lovers. Doppleganger: Ice Bat is in the photo, you don't see him because he is Secret Mission Icebat (of course!) and is hiding behind Wage. Chuckanucka, Toodee, Gato, Peaco, Ugly Dog, Jeero, and Tray were invited but have not yet made the scene. Maybe some will come to Sam's first birthday!

Thanks again for all of the kind words!

yeah i love that crib also.... this is a fantastic room & we did the tree from romp, it really WAS so easy to put up (and the most expensive thing we did in the nursery in terms of decor).
