Nursery Colors Finalist #3: Sam's Chocolate Crash Pad

Child's Name and Age: Sam, 5-months-old
Location: Brooklyn, NY

Other favorite nursery from the contest: Angus's contemporary stripes is a great room entry. The palette was really cool and attractive and I thought the stripes and the dot accents were fun and graphic. I loved that his name was painted on the wall too.

In your child's room, tell us about and show us your favorite colorful object?:
The quilt I made Sam while pregnant with him is my favorite colorful object. The print fabric I used in the quilt and for his bedding created the palette for the rest of his room. While I made the quilt I was daydreaming about meeting my son and hoping that he liked his room. I love the way the quilt turned out and looking at it reminds me of how grateful I am that he is here to enjoy it.

Such a welcoming room. Good job making all of the rooms items pop out without making it overwelming. Love the figures on the shelf, especialy the space man.

I find it absolutely refreshing to see a new color palette introduced to a nursery. the brown is the prefect backdrop for the bright greens & blues. I find it sophisticated & youthful at the same time. & don't even get me started on the fabulous crib (i LOVE it), light fixtures & the ugly dolls. This room is so much fun. Sam is a lucky little man. (& handsome too!)

Sam's room cured my rheumatoid athritis. I have seen color samples. I have tasted color samples, and this one makes my zoom-zoom go boomity-boom-boom-boom.

Delicious! Both the room and Sam. Makes me crave a chocolate covered ginger cookie. The colors are divine - very urban chic but not over the top and the balance with the crisp white and lime green adds a cooling element that very few could pull off. Well done.

I love this nursery too. The chocolate brown brings back warm and fuzzy memories of my son's nursery. People were shocked at my use of brown then (he's 10!) Glad times have caught up and they are more accepting now. Funny how you said the room began as an office, that's how ours ended up. Great minds really do think alike. Kudos to you!

Thanks for the nice comments!
MCamila, the side table is from West elm.
Hector Schecter, glad to hear your rheumatoid athritis is cured.

Somehow you balanced soothing and playful, warm and rich without being over-designed. The collections in the mix are a great offset, sprinkles in the cream and chocolate. Looks like a great place to be a baby, baby momma and baby daddy.

Sam's Room is my favorite of all. I love the bold use of the chocolate brown walls, which make the contrasting white and the colors really pop. I think the wall with the ugly dolls really shows that, as dos the picture of that good looking chap on the green rocker with the orange throw behind him.

I also really admire that the crib's sheets, bumper and quilt were handmade. Not only are they really cool, but I like the fact that its personal. That quilt is really something special. I'd love to buy one.

I'm also a fan of the shelving units, looks like there is a lot of fun stuff there (I see Big Boy and others on the wall).

As a sidenote, its interesting that a few of the finalists had similar color palates (green, brown, white...). Do I smell a trend...(sniff sniff)

Of all the nurseries in all the world, Sam's is by far the coolest (and Sam is by far the cutest)!

Love the colors. They're so much more inspiring than the typical baby blues. Brilliant all around!

I vote Sam!

This room rocks! It is way, way, cool. As is the little guy hanging out in here. I adore the brown/green/orange/white palette. Even if others have also adopted this color scheme, I think this room does a wonderful job of blending DIY touches with repurposing (color of walls, organizers, etc.) with new furniture/accessories. I especially enjoy the alligator. Overall, a bold and inspiring room.

I love Sam’s Chocolate Crash Pad! This room is an amazingly balanced mix of gorgeous, artistic and livable. The colors you chose, the artwork and toys, the furniture and hardwood flooring are all stunning and inviting.
The range of colors is somehow striking and calming at the same time—the room feels airy and bright. The story quilt, the framed art work, the shelves filled with books, the furniture and bedding--all the details are perfect. The room sends an invitation to first look at everything closely and admire, and then to play with the toys or sit down for a cuddle and a read. (Your son is totally adorable and très chill in that photo!)
Every angle and color of Sam’s room is eye-catching, yet the feel is very peaceful. When I arrived at the Nursery Color site I started at the first entry and looked through them in order. I was very impressed by all styles, colors, and the thought and care that went into these rooms, but I kept coming back to look again at the Chocolate Crash Pad and wanted to stay—it’s perfect.

Mmmmmm...chocolate...

I have loved this room since I first saw the photos. Now when I see Sam hanging out in the chair, I'm amazed at how the room seems to have been designed especially for him. However, I remember thinking the first time I viewed these pictures that the room could work for a boy or girl. Kudos to Elizabeth Williams! It's by the far the coolest nursery I've seen since I can remember.

a bunch of overpriced nursery items and here you have it. :(

Let's see some creative spirit more than some wallet talk.

This room is fabulous! I love the way you used color to expand and unify the space. The contrast between the dark brown walls and the white furniture would make the room stand alone. The addition of the rich green binding on the white burlap blinds, the casual toss of orange over the green corner chair, the unique greens, browns, and purples in the handmade bedding give the room a very special, hard to achieve quality of what I will call sophistcated coziness. I am so impressed that you designed and made the bedding and the blinds yourself! Bravo on achieving a truly successful design which uses color as its primary element! In my judgment this room is the best in the contest.

Too funny! I did a double-take because Sam looks so much like my own Viggo. Congratulations on the great room!

I am still trying to put Viggo's together (we moved when he was 4 months old), and so can only look wistfully at the pictures.

this room looks nice. it's a bit dark for my taste; the brown feels a bit weighted, which is a little hard to offset. the white is such a strong contrast, that it seems a bit too harsh, but the greens and oranges do a decent job of correcting this. I wish there was something in a cool color pallette. might do just the trick. i also, wish there were a few more photos of the room from the other perspective. overall, its good, but could use a little finessing
