An Office Chair for Nursing?

2008-04-21-aeron chair.jpg
We've looked at a lot of rockers and gliders here at Ohdeedoh, in all different price ranges and styles. Lately, we've been hearing about the idea of using an office chair for nursing- what do you think?

For one thing, a good chair like the Aeron is ergonomic. Plus, if you're eventually going to need an office chair, you can kill two birds with one stone.

The question is- would it work for nursing? Anyone out there use an office chair?

I use my boss's office to pump at work. She has a Herman Miller (I'm not sure which model it is). I've also used it to nurse my son when I brought him in to work. I love that you can adjust everything.
I don't find the gliders comfortable because I am short. The arm rest is at wrong height and the seat is too deep for me.

I have an Aeron chair in my office (at home), and I have a rocker in the baby's room. I use both. Both are great. I pump in front of my computer usually, so it's definitely great for pumping. I have nursed in it, but tend to nurse the baby in her room or in bed (more for location than comfort).

I work at home and sit at my desk for a ridiculous number of hours every day. And I LOVE my Aeron chair. I should be uncomfortable, but I'm not. It provides great support and everything is very easily adjusted including the arms. So if using it exclusively for nursing, it would be a great option. With adjustable arms you can maintain a comfy position as the baby gets bigger over the course of time nursing. It swivels, and you can bounce in it a bit too, so it's also great for calming the baby.

The drawback, of course, is the price tag. Doubt I would have justified it for a nursing chair. But as an office chair it was a lot easier to do (given the amount of time spent in it). That said, some of the better quality gliders are similar in price. But I wouldn't have purchased one of those either!

I used our computer chairs. Highly recommend them if you don't have room for more furniture. Worked like a charm!

My son's room is super small. no room for rocking. I used ikea's SKRUVSTA office chair. I have the soft, white furry cover. It's a perfect fit for my nursing arms and tall baby. Very compact, right in the corner of the room. Worked for me.

as long as it has arms and lets you tilt back slightly, I would be completely comfortable..if I were still breastfeeding...boo hoo!

I have an Aeron C chair at work and it hasn't been very comfortable for me lately--I'm 18 weeks pregnant and I have serious GI disease as well. I find myself sitting on the very edge. The funny part is that I requested this chair years ago because I had back problems (I lost a lot of weight, no more back problems.) I don't think I'd like to breastfeed in it. Not that I have any idea what that's like yet! We just put together our Sleepytime rocker, which is what I'm planning to use. Love the rocker, it's very comfortable and not hideous like the nursery gliders I keep seeing.

If you can't rest your head on it...you're going to hate it in the middle of the night when you're too tired to even hold your chin up.

Honestly, I think a lot of expectant parents get way too caught up in finding the perfect chair. I have spent far more time nursing on the go (something about the subway always makes my daughter want to nurse) than I have in the rocker we bought. By all means, find the perfect chair--but it's often just not as essential as it seems.

I got a leather la-z-boy. I slept in it sometimes when I was pregnant. It was great for elevating my feet. The first 6 weeks our son would only sleep when we were holding him, and we could sleep in it with him. When he pukes/spits up all over it is super easy to clean up. In the future, we'll have a nice chair for the family room.

I have a Herman Miller Ergon chair which my mom found next to a dumpster. We shampooed the fabric and I've used it numerous times to nurse in front of the computer. I think I used a sling too though when my son was tiny. Recently the chair's armrest was falling apart though so I found another chair and brought it home. My husband rejected it as not as comfortable as our falling apart chair. I decided to fix the armrest instead of tossing the chair and when I pulled it off to recover it I found the Herman Miller mark and found out what chair we have. So that's why it's so comfortable! It's rather expensive new, but I found some used ones for about a $100 when I googled the Ergon chair.

I prefer office chairs for office work and I certainly wouldn't refuse one of these "multi functional" pieces.
